Italy Independent School District is a public school district based in Italy, Texas (USA). In the 2017–2018 school year the district had 628 students. History In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. In 2011 Lee Joffre became the principal of Italy High School. In 2016 became the superintendent of Italy ISD. His wife worked as a librarian and in other capacities for Italy ISD for six years. Italy ( , unlike the country Italy) is a town in Ellis County, Texas, United States. Its population was 1,926 in 2020. The community was named after Italy by a settler who had visited the European country. History Italy was founded in 1879 by colonizers who found the surrounding land suitable for growing cotton, corn, sweet potatoes, and wheat. The Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad reached Italy in 1890, with the railroad stop making the town an important market center. The population grew steadily, from 1,061 in 1900 to 1,500 in 1925, until the Great Depression sparked a decline lasting over three decades. The town began to see economic and population growth again in the 1970s, with the population rising to nearly 2,000 residents by the year 2000. The Waxahachie Daily Light is a newspaper serving Ellis County, Texas. Its daily circulation is 2,300. History The Waxahachie Daily Light started publishing in 1867 and it is the only paper serving Ellis County that started before 1900 and is still operating today. Though papers such as the Waxahachie Argus, the Enterprise, and the Telegraph preceded the Waxahachie Daily Light, by 1917 only the Enterprise and the Daily Light were still in operation. In 1962, the Waxahachie Daily Light became part of Craco, Inc. and Donald L. Coppedge became co-publisher of the paper with Craig Woodson. In 1969, the paper purchased machinery and equipment for printing papers and began printing in off-set and later in four-colors. Italy High School is a public high school located in the city of Italy, Texas, in Ellis County, United States and classified as a 2A school by the UIL. It is a part of the Italy Independent School District located in southwest Ellis County. In 2013, the school was rated " Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency. History In 2011 Lee Joffre became the principal of Italy High. He became the superintendent of the district in 2016. On January 22, 2018, 16-year-old male student Chad Padilla shot a fellow student in the cafeteria, wounding 15-year-old female student Mahkayla Jones. The shooter was arrested and initially charged as a juvenile with aggravated assault though the case was eventually moved to adult court and he was sentenced to 40 years on an attempted murder charge and 20 years on each of the aggravated assault indictments.
