Italy competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, England. It was the third appearance of the European nation, which had not competed at the 1904 Summer Olympics. It was originally going to host the Games, but the eruption of Mount Vesuvius meant the UK hosted them. Riccardo Nowak
Riccardo Nowak (16 January 1885 – 18 February 1950) was an Italian épée, foil and sabre fencer who took part in the 1908 Olympic Games in London. Biography Nowak won an Olympic silver medal in fencing at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. He was part of the Italian team that finished second in the sabre behind Hungary. The others in the team were Marcello Bertinetti, Sante Ceccherini, Alessandro Pirzio Biroli and Abelardo Olivier Abelardo Olivier (9 November 1877 – 24 January 1951) was an Italian fencer. The men's 400 metres was an Olympic event for the fourth time at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. The competition was held from July 21, 1908, to July 23, 1908. The rerun of the final was held on July 25, 1908. The races were held on a track of 536.45 metres= mile in circumference. 37 runners from 11 nations competed. It was the most controversial event of the London Games: the final resulted in the disqualification of American runner John Carpenter who was accused by the British officials of a manoeuvre that was legal under American rules (under which Carpenter normally competed) but prohibited by the British rules under which the race was run. As part of the disqualification of Carpenter, a second final race was ordered, with Halswelle to face the other two finalists again. Emilio Brambilla
Emilio Brambilla (26 June 1882 – 17 October 1938) was an Italian athlete Biography He competed in the 1906 Summer Olympics in Athens and in the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. In 1906 he finished 16th in the standing long jump event and 19th in the ancient pentathlon competition. Two years later he participated in the 200 metres event he placed fifth and last in his preliminary heat and was eliminated from competition. He also participated in the freestyle javelin event but his result is unknown. Gaspare Torretta
Gaspare Torretta (29 May 1883 – 4 July 1910) was an Italian athlete who competed in the 1906 Summer Olympics and in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Biography In 1906, Torretta finished 17th in the long jump event. He also participated in the 100 metres competition but was eliminated in the semi-finals. Two years later in the 100 metres event, Torretta took second place in his first round heat with a time of 12.0 seconds. He did not advance to the semifinals. Torretta died in Milan. Dorando Pietri
Dorando Pietri (; often wrongly spelt Petri; 16 October 1885 – 7 February 1942) was an Italian long-distance runner. He finished first in the marathon at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London but was subsequently disqualified. Biography Early years Pietri was born in Mandrio, a ''frazione'' of Correggio, but spent his youth in Carpi (Emilia-Romagna region). Here he worked as a shop-boy at a confectionery shop. He was 1.59 m (5 ft., 2½ in.) tall. In September 1904 the most famous Italian runner of the time, Pericle Pagliani, took part in a race in Carpi. According to tradition, Pietri was attracted by the event and, still wearing his work clothes, ran to the finish ahead of Pagliani. A few days later Pietri débuted in a distance race, finishing second in the 3,000 m of Bologna. The following year he achieved his first international success, winning the 30 km in Paris. Emilio Lunghi
Emilio Lunghi (16 March 1887, in Genoa – 27 September 1925) was an Italian athlete. He won the silver medal in the men's 800 metres race at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, making him the first Italian to win an Olympic medal. Biography His time in the race was 1:54.2, which beat the previous Olympic record by 1.8 seconds but was still 1.4 seconds behind the time of Mel Sheppard, who took gold and set a new record at 1:52.8. Lunghi had won his semifinal heat with a time of 1:57.2 to advance to the final. Lunghi also competed in the 1500 metres. His first-round heat also included Norman Hallows; both of the two runners broke the Olympic record in that heat, but Hallows came out on top by running the race in 4:03.4 as opposed to Lunghi's 4:03.8.
