Italian Left
Italian Left ( it, Sinistra Italiana, SI) is a left-wing political party in Italy. SI was launched in November 2015 as a parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies (full name: Italian Left – Left Ecology Freedom), including Left Ecology Freedom (SEL), dissidents from the Democratic Party like Future to the Left, and splinters from the Five Star Movement. At its launch, SI included 32 deputies, who were soon followed by 8 senators (who formed a sub-group within the Mixed Group of the Senate in February 2016), and 2 MEPs. SI was officially formed as a full-fledged party in February 2017, after SEL had chosen to merge into it in December 2016. The party is led by Nicola Fratoianni. Notable founding members included Nichi Vendola (former leader of SEL), Loredana De Petris, Stefano Fassina, and Sergio Cofferati. Democratic Socialism
Democratic socialism is a Left-wing politics, left-wing political philosophy that supports political democracy and some form of a socially owned economy, with a particular emphasis on economic democracy, workplace democracy, and workers' self-management within a market socialist economy or an alternative form of a decentralised planned socialist economy. Laura Boldrini
Laura Boldrini, (; born 28 April 1961) is an Italian politician and former United Nations official, who served as President of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy. Previously she served as Spokesperson to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Southern Europe. Biography Born in Macerata, Marche, Boldrini graduated in Law from the Sapienza University of Rome in 1985. Afterwards, she was employed at the Italian public service broadcasting corporation RAI, working both for television and radio. In 1989 she was employed for four years at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), where she was active in video and radio production. Arturo Scotto (born 15 May 1978) is an Italian politician. Biography Graduated in Political Sciences, Scotto became a member of the Left Youth in 1994 and in 1996 he was elected Secretary of the Circle of Torre del Greco. In 2001 he entered the national leadership of the Democrats of the Left. With the 2006 elections, Scotto is elected at the Chamber of Deputies with the Democrats of the Left, being the youngest Deputy of the legislature. Sergio Cofferati
Sergio Cofferati (born 30 January 1948) is an Italian trade unionist and politician. Secretary general of CGIL from 1994 to 2002, Mayor of Bologna for the Democrats of the Left from 2004 to 2009 and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2009 to 2019, elected as a candidate of the Democratic Party. Early life and career Cofferati was born at Sesto ed Uniti, in the province of Cremona. Initially an employee of Milan's Pirelli and a member of CGIL, Cofferati rose up in the major Italian trade union, becoming leader of Filcea (the chemical labour wing of CGIL) in 1988, and Secretary General of the CGIL itself in 1990, succeeding Bruno Trentin. Stefano Fassina (born 17 April 1966) is an Italian economist and politician, member of the Chamber of Deputies and former member of the Italian Democratic Party. Since September 2018, he is the leader of the left-wing political association, Fatherland and Constitution. Biography Born in Rome, a former university leader of the Left Youth Organization in 1996, after graduating in economics from Bocconi University Fassina became consultant for the minister of Finance in the Prodi government. Loredana De Petris (born 24 November 1957) is an Italian politician and senator for four legislatures. Biography From Proletarian Democracy to the Greens De Petris began her political career in the 1980s joining Proletarian Democracy and has been active in the anti-nuclear and environmentalist movement, organizing the referendum against nuclear power, hunting and the use of pesticides in agriculture. Nicola "Nichi" Vendola (; born 26 August 1958) is an Italian left-wing politician and LGBT activist who was a Member of the Chamber of Deputies from Apulia from 1992 to 2005 and President of Apulia from 2005 to 2015. He is one of the first openly LGBT Italian politicians and the first openly LGBT heads of a regional government in Italy. Mixed Group
The mixed group ( it, Gruppo Misto, GM) is a parliamentary group active in both houses of the Italian Parliament, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The groups comprise all the deputies and the senators, respectively, who are not members of any other parliamentary group. For them, membership of the Mixed Groups is the default option. Members of the Mixed Groups may form sub-groups reflecting their party affiliation. Three deputies are needed for the formation of a sub-group in the Chamber, while individual senators can form sub-groups in the Senate. Five Star Movement
The Five Star Movement ( it, Movimento 5 Stelle , M5S) is a political party in Italy. Its leader and president is Giuseppe Conte, Prime Minister of Italy from 2018 until 2021. The M5S was founded on 4 October 2009 by Beppe Grillo, a comedian and blogger, and Gianroberto Casaleggio, a web strategist. From 2014 to 2017, it was a member of the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy group in the European Parliament, along with the UK Independence Party and minor Eurosceptic parties.
