It Could Be You (Australian Game Show)
''It Could Be You'' is an Australian daytime television series which aired from 1961 to 1966, with later revivals. The best known version was the first version, which was hosted by Tommy Hanlon Jr., assisted by Jack Little. Hanlon was among several Americans who had shows on 1960s Australian television, the others included Delo and Daly, Larry K. Nixon, and Don Lane. Broadcast originally on Melbourne station GTV-9, it eventually become a Nine Network show. While considered a game show, it was not a strict quiz format. The unusual format (often involving reunions with long-lost relatives) was popular with female viewers. The running time of the episodes is not known (Australian prime-time series typically ran 23–25 minutes during the 1960s, but daytime series could sometimes run shorter) The series was still popular when it ended, with Hanlon hosting a new show called ''The Tommy Hanlon Show''. Tommy Hanlon Jr. (14 August 1923 – 9 October 2003) was an American-born actor, comedian, television host and circus ringmaster, notable for his career in Australia after emigrating there in 1959, where he became a Gold Logie-award-winning media personality, in 1962. Hanlon was notable for his early television appearances on daytime television and as host of the Australian version of United States game show ''It Could Be You''. Biography Early life He was born Tommy Gene Thomason in Parkersburg, West Virginia in 1923, to vaudeville performers Homer Emmons Thomason (whose stage name was "Tommy Hanlon") and Ruth Dorothy Manning. He appeared in his parents' act at the age of four, and later took the stage name Tommy Hanlon Jr. after his father's stage name. GTV (Australia)
GTV is a commercial television station in Melbourne, Australia, owned by the Nine Network. The station is currently based at studios at 717 Bourke Street, Docklands. History GTV-9 was amongst the first television stations to begin regular transmission in Australia. Test transmissions began on 27 September 1956, introduced by former 3DB radio announcer Geoff Corke, based at the Mount Dandenong transmitter, as the studios in Richmond were not yet ready. The station covered the 1956 Summer Olympics which Melbourne hosted., the 1956 Carols By Candlelight and the Davis Cup tennis as part of its test transmissions. The station was officially opened on 19 January 1957 by Victorian Governor Sir Dallas Brooks from the studios in Bendigo Street, Richmond. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts.
