Kingslee James McLean Daley (born 1 December 1983), better known by his stage name Akala, is a British rapper, journalist, author, activist and poet from Kentish Town, London. In 2006, he was voted the Best Hip Hop Act at the MOBO Awards and has been included on the annual ''Powerlist'' of the 100 most influential Black British people in the UK, most recently making the 2021 edition. Early life and education Daley was born in Crawley, West Sussex, in 1983 to a Scottish mother and Jamaican father who separated before he was born, and grew up with his mother in Kentish Town, north London. He has recalled the day he realised that his mother was white, and was embarrassed by her whiteness. His mother had educated him about black history and introduced him to radical black thinkers, yet there would always remain a racial dimension to those relationships. Grime (music)
Grime is a genre of electronic music that emerged in London in the early 2000s. It developed out of the earlier UK dance style UK garage, and draws influences from jungle, dancehall, and hip hop. The style is typified by rapid, syncopated breakbeats, generally around 140 beats per minute, and often features an aggressive or jagged electronic sound. Emceeing is a significant element of the style, and lyrics often revolve around gritty depictions of urban life. The style initially spread among pirate radio stations and underground scenes before achieving some mainstream recognition in the UK during the mid-2000s through artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Kano, Lethal Bizzle, and Wiley. Rap rock is a fusion genre that fuses vocal and instrumental elements of hip hop with various forms of rock. Niara Scarlett
Niara Scarlett is a British-born singer-songwriter, perhaps most famous for her work with British production house Xenomania. Scarlett appeared on a number of dub, garage, grime, and house singles in the latter half of the 1990s and the 2000s. Background Scarlett has co-written some of the most influentional pop songs of the past ten years, including Girls Aloud's debut single " Sound of the Underground" and "Hole in the Head" by Sugababes. In 2004, she released "Looking for a Place" as part of a duo Mania, consisting of Scarlett and Giselle Sommerville. Mania was a joint venture between producer Brian Higgins and BMG. An album, ''Do You Know Your Daughter's on the Roof'', was planned, but never saw the light of day due to the disappointing chart position of "Looking for a Place".
