Istanbul Half Marathon
The Istanbul Half Marathon ( tr, İstanbul Yarı Maratonu) is an annual road running event over the half marathon distance (21.1 km) that takes place on the streets of Istanbul, Turkey in April. The event is sponsored by Vodafone. It was promoted to the IAAF Gold Label status for 2017. History The event was established in 1987 under the name "Haliç Yarı Maratonu" ("Golden Horn Half Marathon"), and continued to run until 1993. After a break of 17 years, it revived in 2010 under the name "8th International Golden Horn Half Marathon" with participation of around 1,500 athletes from 22 nations. The organization of the half marathon took afour-year break until 2015 when the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality re-established the road running event under the name "Istanbul Half Marathon", and Vodafon took over the sponsorship. Gladys Cherono Kiprono (born 12 May 1983) is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who competes in track and road running events. She became the first woman to win both the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres at the African Championships in 2012. Evans Kiplagat Barkowet (born 5 March 1988) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes for Azerbaijan since June 2016 when he gained citizenship. Career He emerged in national events in 2008 before competing abroad in road running events, with a third-place finish at the 2009 Lille Half Marathon in 59:56 establishing him as an elite level runner. Bahar Doğan (born September 2, 1974) is a Turkish female long-distance runner, who is specialized in marathon running. She is coached by Ertan Hatipoğlu at Üsküdar Belediyespor. The tall athlete at is a student of physical education and sports at Kocaeli University. She is the winner of 2012 Adana Half Marathon with 1:16.18. Bahar Doğan represented Turkey at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing in the marathon event finishing 50th. In 2011, she won the first edition of Darıca Half Marathon in a time 1:14:10. She qualified for participation in the marathon event at the 2012 Olympics in London, and finished in 63rd place. Leonard Patrick Komon (born 10 January 1988) is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner and was the world record holder in the 10 kilometres. His 10K world record in 2010 with a time of 26:44 is a 17 seconds improvement on the previous best. He won a half marathon with 59:14 in 2014 (Berlin), which was the fastest debut half marathon in history at the time.
