Israel In The Eurovision Song Contest 1989
Israel was present at the Eurovision Song Contest 1989, held in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Israeli broadcaster IBA continued to use a national final, Kdam Eurovision, to select their entry. Before Eurovision Kdam Eurovision 1989 The final was hosted by Moshe Beker and Shira Gera. 12 songs competed in the final held on 30 March 1989, where regional televoting chose the winner. Members of the public were phoned at random and were asked for their favourite song. These results were converted into votes for 6 regions of Israel. The winner was Gili Netanel and Galit Burg-Michael with the song "Derekh Hamelekh". At Eurovision Netanel and Burg-Michael performed 2nd on the night of the contest, following Italy and preceding Ireland. At the close of the voting it had received 50 points, placing 12th in a field of 22. The Kdam Eurovision (Hebrew: קדם אירוויזיון, transliteration "Kdam-Erovizyon", translation "Pre-Eurovision") in short known as the Kdam (Hebrew: קדם, literal translation, lit. The Eurovision Song Contest 1989 was the 34th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, following Céline Dion's victory at the with the song "Ne partez pas sans moi". Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG SSR), the contest was held at Palais de Beaulieu on 6 May 1989 and was hosted by Swiss model Lolita Morena and journalist Jacques Deschenaux. Twenty-two countries took part in the contest with returning after having been disqualified the year before. The winner was with the song " Rock Me" by Croatian band Riva. This was the only victory for Yugoslavia as a unified state. As of 2022 they are still the last act to win the contest performing last. The Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA; ) was Israel's public broadcaster from 1948 to 2017. Anat Atzmon ( he, ענת עצמון, born 27 November 1958) is an Israeli actress and singer. Biography Atzmon was born and raised in Tel Aviv. She is the daughter of the theater actor Shmulik Atzmon. In her childhood her father exposed her to the Yiddish culture. Atzmon studied at the Aleph High School of Arts Tel Aviv (תיכון א' לאמנויות תל אביב). In 1976 Atzmon was drafted and she subsequently served in the IDF theater. After her military service Atzmon learned to act in the Tel Aviv University. Atzmon became widely famous in Israel during 1978, when she played the main character of Nili in Boaz Davidson's cult youth film ''Lemon Popsicle'' (''Eskimo Lemon''). Milk and Honey ( he, חלב ודבש ''Khalav U'Dvash'') was an Israeli vocal group. The original line-up consisted of Shmulik Bilu, Reuven Gvirtz, Yehuda Tamir and Gali Atari. History The group was assembled in 1978 by producer Shlomo Zach and composer Kobi Oshrat, after both Hakol Over Habibi and Yardena Arazi turned down the opportunity to perform Oshrat's song "Hallelujah" in the Israeli national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 1979. Milk and Honey eventually won the national selection, and went on to also win the Eurovision Song Contest 1979. "Hallelujah" peaked in the UK Singles Chart at #5 in April 1979. Avi Toledano ( he, אבי טולדנו; born April 4, 1948) is an Israeli singer and songwriter. Biography Avraham ("Avi") Toledano was born in Meknes, Morocco to a Jewish family. At the age of 5, the family relocated to Casablanca, where Toledano attended the Alliance Israélite Universelle. During his teenage years, he was involved in Labour Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair, which was illegal in Morocco at the time. In 1965, at the age of 16, he immigrated to Israel with other members of Hashomer Hatzair, and settled in Kibbutz Ruhama in the Negev.
