It was first known as the Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics (''Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik''), due to its having been developed at the Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum in Wien (Social and Economic Museum of Vienna) between 1925 and 1934.
