Ismail Bin Marjan
Ismail bin Marjan (7 June 1920 – 25 January 1991) was a badminton player from Malaya/Singapore who had won many individual and doubles titles at local, regional and international competitions throughout the 1940s and 1950s. He was best known for his doubles prowess as he partnered Ong Poh Lim to win several major honors in Asia and Europe. Ismail was the first Malay to have won the prestigious Thomas Cup. Early life Ismail was born on 7 June 1920, in British Malaya. He was the son of Haji Marjan. Ismail began playing badminton at a young age in the local Malay badminton community. Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by the umpire, service judge, or (in their absence) the opposing side. The shuttlecock is a feathered or (in informal matches) plastic projectile which flies differently from the balls used in many other sports. Eddy Choong
Dato' Choong Ewe Beng (29 May 1931 – 28 January 2013) was a Malaysian badminton player. He was David Choong's brother and they played men's doubles together. Early life Choong Ewe Beng, also known as Eddy, was born on May 29, 1931, and was the third son of a wealthy family in Penang. His parents were named Dato' Choong Eng Hai and Datin Ho Guat Im. Choong first went to primary and secondary school in Penang before moving to England at the turn of the 1950s to study law and medicine. His passion for the sport quickly eclipsed his studies and Eddy later said his studies were “long forgotten”. In the UK, Eddie was much attracted to the Jim Russell School of racing driving and enrolled, but parental pressure forced him to re-think his priorities. However, his passion for driving took him to other aspects of motor sports, and when back on Penang, he revelled in grass track, hill climbs and karting. French Open (badminton)
The French Open (french: Internationaux de France de Badminton) is an annual badminton tournament held in France since 1909 and hosted by the Fédération Française de Badminton (FFBad). The tournament was halted between 1915 and 1934, in 1965, 1970, 1972, 1994 and 2006. Not previously considered one of the international badminton circuit's leading events, it was promoted to become part of the BWF Super Series in 2007 making the French Open one of the 12 major badminton tournaments in the world. Singapore Open (badminton)
The Singapore Open is a badminton event that has been held in Singapore annually since 1929. Badminton World Federation categorized Singapore Open as one of the seven BWF World Tour Super 500 events in the BWF events structure since 2018. In 2023, the tournament will be upgraded to a Super 750 event. In 1929, the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) was established to promote the sport and organise competitions. Its first official annual open championships was held in that same year with the best players chosen to represent Singapore in the regional tournaments. In 1957, it became an open invitation championships and was held annually until 1973. In 1987–1989, the tournament was known as the Konica Cup, an invitation championships exclusively for Asian players, and in 1990, for the first time entered the International Badminton Federation Grand Prix circuit. The Denmark Open, or formerly known as Danish Open, is an annual badminton tournament held in Denmark and organized by Badminton Denmark. The Denmark Open was part of the BWF Super Series Premier from 2011 to 2017. BWF categorised it as one of the five BWF World Tour Super 750 events per the BWF events structure since 2018. History The tournament started in 1936 and it is now the world's second oldest badminton tournament. It was interrupted by World War II and was on hiatus from 1956 through 1964. David Choong
Choong Ewe Leong (; 5 April 1929 – 10 September 2011) was a former Malaysian badminton player and politician. Career With his younger brother, the charismatic Eddy Choong, he captured men's doubles titles at the prestigious All-England Championships in 1951, 1952, and 1953. They were finalists in 1954, 1955, and 1957. He shared the All-England mixed doubles crown with June White (Timperly) in 1953 and they were finalists in 1955. Between 1949 and 1957 Choong won national open titles in most of the European nations that held such tournaments. In part, because he resided in Great Britain during most of his badminton prime, David Choong never represented Malaya in the coveted Thomas Cup (world team) competition. Thomas Cup
The Thomas Cup, sometimes called the World Men's Team Championships, is an international badminton competition among teams representing member nations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the sport's global governing body. The championships have been conducted every two years since the 1982, amended from being conducted every three years since the first tournament held in 1948–1949. The final phase of the tournament involves 12 teams competing at venues within the host nation and is played concurrently with the final phase of the world women's team championships, the Uber Cup (first held in 1956–1957). The All England Open Badminton Championships is the world's oldest badminton tournament, held annually in England. With the introduction of the BWF's latest grading system, it was given Super Series status in 2007, upgraded to Super Series Premier status in 2011. The world's first open tournament was held in the English town of Guildford in 1898, the success of which paved the way for the All England's inaugural edition, which was held at London's Horticultural Halls in 1899.
