Ismael Cortinas
Ismael Cortinas is a town in the Flores Department of Uruguay. Geography The town is located on the junction of Route 23 with Route 12, at southwest edge of the department and borders the departments of Soriano, Colonia and San José. The Grande River (Uruguay) (Spanish: ''Arroyo Grande'') runs near the town. History It was declared "Pueblo" (village) on 18 October 1950 by the Act of Ley N° 11.607, and named after Ismael Cortinas, a Deputy, Senator, journalist and playwright. Its status was elevated to "Villa" (town) on 15 November 1963 by the Act of Ley N° 13.167. Population In 2011 Ismael Cortinas had a population of 918. Uruguay consists of 19 departments (''departamentos''). Each department has a legislature called a Departmental Board. The ''Intendente'' is the department's chief executive. History The first division of the Republic into six departments occurred on 27 January 1816. In February of the same year, two more departments were formed, and in 1828 one more was added. When the First Constitution was signed in 1830, there were nine departments. These were the departments of Montevideo, Maldonado, Canelones, San José, Colonia, Soriano, Paysandú, Durazno and Cerro Largo. Flores Department
Flores () is a department of Uruguay, positioned in the southwest of the central part of the country. Its capital is Trinidad. It borders Durazno Department to the north and east, Florida Department to the southeast, San José Department to the south and Soriano Department to the west. Its density of population was the lowest during the 2011 census, closely followed by the departments of Durazno and Treinta y Tres. Uruguay's calling code is +598. Since 2010, national long distance calling was eliminated, thus there are no area codes in each city. Landline telephony ANTEL (Spanish abbreviation for National Administration of Telecommunications) is Uruguay's state-owned company for telecommunications. Previously in Uruguay, phone numbers used to have between 4 and 7 digits. To make a local phone call, you only had to dial those digits. To make a call between two cities from different departments, you had to dial zero, plus area code, plus phone number. As from August 29, 2010, all phone numbers have 8 digits, according to the new National Numbering Plan. Zero prior to area code was eliminated. Soriano Department
Soriano () is a department of Uruguay. Its capital is Mercedes. It is located on the west of the country, south of RÃo Negro Department, north of Colonia Department and west of Flores Department. Its western border is the RÃo Uruguay, separating it from Argentina. History In 1624, a Franciscan Mission established a reduction for the indigenous tribes of the area named Santo Domingo Soriano. Ismael Cortinas (Uruguayan Politician)
Ismael Cortinas (1884–1940) was a Uruguayan political figure, journalist and playwright. Background Ismael Cortinas was born on 17 June 1884 in San José de Mayo, Uruguay, son of Miguel Cortinas and Laura Ventura Peláez Maciel. He went to Universidad de la República (University of the Republic of Uruguay) but never graduated. Writer, politician, activist and playwright Laura Cortinas was his sister, and Cesár Cortinas, a noted musician, was his brother. Cortinas was a journalist by profession. He also wrote plays, including the comedy 'La rosa natural'.
