Islay Lee
Islay Lee (born 4 October 1949) is an Australian former rowing (sport), rower. He was a fifteen-time national champion in both sculls (four times) and sweep-oared boats (eleven times), a national representative at world championships and a dual Olympian. He competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the 1980 Summer Olympics. From 1976 to 1980 he was Australia's prominent sweep-oared stroke, setting the pace in Sydney Rowing Club crews which won five successive national titles in the coxed four, three successive titles in a coxed pair, and in three successive King's Cup (rowing), King's Cup winning New South Wales selection eights. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. World Rowing Junior Championships
The World Rowing Junior Championships is an international rowing regatta organized by FISA (the International Rowing Federation). A rower or coxswain shall be classified as a Junior until 31 December of the year in which he reaches the age of 18. After that date, he shall be classified as an Under 23 rower. During Olympic years it is held at the same location as the Senior World Rowing Championships. The first FISA Youth Regatta was held in 1967 and has been held every year since then, being raised to the status of FISA Junior Champs in 1970 and Junior World Champs in 1985. Many European countries send athletes not up to the standard for World Championships to the Coupe de la Jeunesse. Reinhold Batschi
Reinhold Batschi OAM (born 20 August 1942 in Sânpetru, Brașov County, Romania) is a former Romanian rower and leading Australian rowing coach. He was the inaugural Head Coach of the Australian Institute of Sport's rowing program and Head Coach of the Australian Olympic rowing teams from 1980 to 2000. Rowing career Batschi became involved in rowing as a result of Romania's compulsory national service. Representing Romania as a rower, Batschi won a bronze medal in the men's coxed fours at the 1967 European Rowing Championships. At the 1968 Mexico Olympics, his crew the men's coxed four finished seventh. He retired from competitive rowing in 1969. Athol MacDonald
Athol MacDonald (born 3 September 1953) is an Australian former representative rower. He was a four-time national champion who competed at World Championships and in the men's eight event at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Club and state rowing Raised in South Australia, MacDonald's senior rowing was from the Adelaide Rowing Club where his younger brother Chester was also a successful senior rower. Athol first made state selection for South Australia in 1973 in the men's eight which contested the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta. He rowed in two further South Australian King's Cup eights in 1974 and 1975 stroking the 1975 crew to a second place. By 1976 MacDonald had relocated to Sydney and was rowing from the Mosman Rowing Club. He made state selection for New South Wales in 1976 in the four seat of the men's eight which contested and won the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships.
