Island Road railway station opened on 1 July 1909 as the second intermediate station on the Ballaghaderreen branch line from Kilfree Junction which had opened in 1874. It was single line with no passing loop with a station masters' house and small waiting room. The two armed lattice signal was notable. The station was situated alongside the gated level crossing on ''Island Road'' in the townland of Tawnymucklagh, about 1/2 mile from the village of Monasteraden Monasteraden () is a village in County Sligo, Ireland. Monasteraden
Monasteraden () is a village in County Sligo, Ireland. The village is located on the shores of Lough Gara. St Aiden's church is the village's church. Other sites include Lough Gara Lodge, Slí na Croí's Roundhouse Ecolodge, Drury's pub and the general store. Geography Monasteraden lies to the west of Lough Gara and with the Curlew Mountains inlier of sandstones and conglomerates to the North. Midland Great Western Railway
The Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) was the third largest Irish gauge () railway company in Ireland. It was incorporated in 1845 and absorbed into the Great Southern Railways in 1924. At its peak the MGWR had a network of , making it Ireland's third largest network after the Great Southern and Western Railway (GS&WR) and the Great Northern Railway of Ireland. Great Southern Railways
The Great Southern Railways Company (often Great Southern Railways, or GSR) was an Irish company that from 1925 until 1945 owned and operated all railways that lay wholly within the Irish Free State (the present-day Republic of Ireland). The Ballaghaderreen branch line connected Ballaghaderreen railway station to Kilfree Junction railway station, Kilfree Junction on the Dublin to Sligo Mac Diarmada railway station, Sligo main line. Kilfree Junction Railway Station
Kilfree Junction is a former station in County Sligo and was located on the Sligo line in the townland of Cloontycarn between and about from the track summit though the Curlew Mountains. It enabled connections on the branch line to in County Roscommon. The junction faced Ballymote and Sligo station and was a trailing junction in the Boyle and Dublin Connolly direction requiring a reversal. The station was not located near any significant settlement, the nearest, Gorteen in County Sligo being over 6 km away. The station had three platforms: two served a passing loop on the main line and the third was used by the branch line. All main line trains usually used the island platform for easier transfers to the branch line. A passing loop (UK usage) or passing siding (North America) (also called a crossing loop, crossing place, refuge loop or, colloquially, a hole) is a place on a single line railway or tramway, often located at or near a station, where trains or trams travelling in opposite directions can pass each other.
