Island Independents
The Island Independents were a political group who stood as mutually-supporting independent candidates on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom for the 2013 Isle of Wight Council election. The group won 15 of the 40 seats, emerging as the joint-largest group on the council, but without an overall majority. The group leader is Councillor Ian Stephens. In the 2017 local elections the group had 22 candidates standing and became the largest group in opposition with 11 councillors. The Isle of Wight ( ) is a county in the English Channel, off the coast of Hampshire, from which it is separated by the Solent. It is the largest and second-most populous island of England. The Isle of Wight Council is a unitary authority covering the Isle of Wight, an island in the south of England. It is currently made up of 39 seats. Since the 2021 election, there has been an 'Alliance' coalition administration of Independents, the Green Party, Island Independent Network, and Our Island councillors, who together with the Liberal Democrat and Vectis Party councillors voted to elect Independent Lora Peacey-Wilcox as leader of the council, with the Labour councillor being absent. The Conservative group is the principal opposition party, and the single councillors from Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Vectis Party also sit outside the Alliance group. 2013 Isle Of Wight Council Election
The 2013 Isle of Wight Council election was held on 2 May 2013 to elect all 40 members for a four-year term to the Isle of Wight Council, a unitary authority which governs the Isle of Wight. Going into the election, the Conservative Party was looking to gain a third term in power after first being elected to overall control in 2005, but in one of the shock results of the wider local elections being held in the country, the Conservatives lost overall control of the council, having been reduced to 15 seats, 6 short of a majority of 21. The 'Island Independents', a mutually supporting group of candidates and councillors running as independents, gained the same number of seats, whilst other independents, UKIP, Labour, and a Liberal Democrat made up the remainder. The 2017 Isle of Wight Council election took place on 4 May 2017 as part of the 2017 United Kingdom local elections, 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. All 40 Councillors were elected from 39 Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, electoral divisions, which each returned either one or two Councillors by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office. The result of the election saw the Isle of Wight Conservative Party (UK), Conservatives re-take majority control of the Isle of Wight Council after electing 25 Councillors. The Island Independents, who after the previous election had formed the ruling group dropped to nine. Elsewhere, the Liberal Democrats (UK), Liberal Democrats had a net gain of one, whilst Labour Party (UK), Labour had a net loss of one. Elections to Isle of Wight Council took place on 6 May 2021 as part of the 2021 United Kingdom local elections. These were held at the same time as the elections for the Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner. The elections saw the Conservatives lose control of the council, losing seats against the national trend for the party. Results summary Background New ward divisions were used for this election, with thirty wards changing, with the number of wards reduced by one to 39 single-member seats. The Independent Network (IN) is a United Kingdom-based non-profit organisation supporting independent politicians and political candidates. Founded in 2005, the IN consists of supporters and volunteers who advocate non-partisan politics. Former independent MPs Martin Bell and Richard Taylor have been involved. A number of supporters of the IN are current independent representatives in European, national, regional and local governments and independent candidates in local and general elections. The IN does not impose any political views on the individuals it supports. However, they must be non-discriminatory and adhere to a code of conduct proposed by Bell and endorsed by the IN executive committee.
