Islam in Madagascar is a minority religion, with most Madagascans adhering to Christianity. Due to secular nature of the Madagascar's constitution, Muslims are free to proselytize and build places of worship in the country. Islam has been well established in what is now known as Madagascar for centuries and today Muslims represent 2 to 25 percent of the total population. Malagasy (; ) is an Austronesian language and the national language of Madagascar. Sorabe or Sora-be () is an alphabet based on Arabic, formerly used to transcribe the Malagasy language (belonging to the Malayo-Polynesian language family) and the Antemoro Malagasy dialect, dating from the 15th century. History Researchers are still hypothesizing about the origins of this transcription system. "Sorabe" means literally "large writings" from Arabic " sura" (writing) and Malagasy "be" (large). Majunga
