Ishrat Jahan (lawyer)
Ishrat Jahan is an Indian practising advocate and former municipal councillor for the Indian National Congress in Delhi who is an accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and was granted bail on 14 March 2022 after her incarceration since February 2020. Biography Jahan has been a practising advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi since 2006. She was elected a councillor for Jagatpuri (an urban ward in Krishna Nagar, Delhi) under the Indian National Congress ticket in 2012. Ishrat Jahan was a prominent activist in the Citizenship Amendment Act protests that began on 13 January 2020. She was arrested on 26 February 2020 along with two other activists on a variety of charges. Lawyers from the Indian Civil Liberties Union and the Human Rights Law Network who went to the police station to seek their release were allegedly beaten by police. Ishrat Jahan Encounter Killing
The Ishrat Jahan case is an ongoing case where officers of the Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch and members of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) of Ahmedabad are accused of fatally shooting four people unlawfully on 15 June 2004 in an " encounter killing". Several officials associated with the case, including those from Home Ministry and Intelligence Bureau, later accused the then UPA government of changing an affidavit for political gains. The Supreme Court decided in 2016 to hear a plea for quashing action against Gujarat police. Those killed in the incident were Ishrat Jahan Raza, a 19-year-old woman from Mumbra, Maharashtra, and three men – Javed Ghulam Sheikh (born Pranesh Pillai), Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar.
