Ishmael Levenston
Ishmael Mathew Ameal Levenston (23 July 1940 – 19 October 2019) was a Saban politician and founder of the Saba Labour Party. Political career Levenston entered Saba politics in 1975, following in the footsteps of his father, John Esmond Matthew Levenston. He was elected by preferential votes to the Island Council of Saba as a member of the Democratic Party. In 1979 he ran with the newly formed Saba People Party and lost his seat on the Island Council. For the 1983 Island Council election he teamed up with the Saba United Party (SUP) and got elected once again by preferential votes, serving as the opposition on the Island Council for four more years. In 1987 he formed the True Labour Democratic Party but did not obtain enough votes to be elected. In 1991 he helped the Windward Islands People's Movement regain control of the council but didn't get enough votes for a seat. Saba (island)
Saba (; , ) is a Caribbean island which is the smallest special municipality (officially “public body”) of the Netherlands. It consists largely of the active volcano Mount Scenery, which at is the highest point of the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands. The island lies in the northern Leeward Islands portion of the West Indies, southeast of the Virgin Islands. Together with Bonaire and Sint Eustatius it forms the BES islands. The Bottom
The Bottom (formerly ''Botte'') is the capital and largest town of the island of Saba, the Caribbean Netherlands, and is the first stop on the way from Saba's Port in Fort Bay towards the rest of the island. In 2001, it had 462 inhabitants of the total 1,349 islanders. History The Bottom was founded in 1632 by colonists from Zeeland. The original name of the town was ''De Botte'', old Dutch for "The Bowl", referring to its geographical position in a valley surrounded by the various mountains. The island attracted Irish and Scottish settlers, and the main language became English. "The Bottom" is an English corruption of this name. The Saba Labour Party (SLP) is a political party in Saba. The 2019 elections saw the SLP lose both their seats in the Island Council. Island council elections were held in the Netherlands Antilles on 29 April ( ABC islands) and 6 May 1983 ( SSS islands) to elect the members of the island councils of its six island territories. The election was won by the People's Electoral Movement (13 seats) in Aruba, the Bonaire Democratic Party (5 seats) in Bonaire, the New Antilles Movement (8 seats) in Curaçao, the Windward Islands People's Movement (4 seats) in Saba, the Democratic Party Statia (3 seats) in Sint Eustatius, and the Democratic Party (5 seats) in Sint Maarten. The Windward Islands People's Movement (WIPM) is a political party in Saba, which held all five seats in the Island Council after the 2019 elections and until June 1, 2022, when council member Hemmie Van Xanten resigned from the party while continuing to serve as a councilor. When party member Esmeralda Johnson was elected to a seat on the island council in 2019, she became the youngest person ever to serve on it.
