Ishkashim ( prs, اشکاشم; ps, اشکاشم; also transliterated ''Eshkashem'' or ''Ashkāsham'') is a border town in Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan. With a population of around 12,120 people, the town serves as the capital of Ishkashim District. Another town by the same name is located on the other side of the Panj River in the Gorno-Badakhshan region of Tajikistan, although that town is normally transliterated Ishkoshim following Tajik practice. Ishkashim District
Ishkashim District ( ps, ولسوالی اشکاشم; prs, ولسوالی اشکاشکم) is one of the 28 districts of Badakhshan Province in eastern Afghanistan. The border town of Ishkashim (also: Eshkashem, Ashkāsham; ps, اشکاشم) serves as the district's capital. The population of the district is approximately 15,951 residents, majority of whom are believed to be ethnic Tajiks followed by Pashtuns, Uzbeks and others. In addition to Afghanistan's two main languages of Dari and Pashto, the language of Ishkashimi is also spoken in the district by the native people. Ishkashim District lies between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan and Gorno-Badakhshan in Tajikistan, where there is a settlement with the same name: Ishkoshim.The Afghanistan - Tajikistan border there
