Ishikari Coalfield
The Ishikari coal basin lies in the tertiary mountains of the mining region of Sorachi Subprefecture, Sorachi, east of the Ishikari Plain in central Hokkaido. These coal veins contain the largest quantity of coal of Japan. Because of its late discovery the historical role of the coalfield could not be compared with that of the Chikuho coalfield, but its economic importance since the Japanese industrial revolution is comparable with that of the southern Chikuhō coalfield. Discovery It was explorer Matsuura Takeshirō (松浦 武四郎), who, during his journey through Hokkaido in 1857, first marked the coal seams on the banks of the Sorachi river near Akabira. In 1868, carpenter Kimura Kichitarō (木村 吉太郎) discovered coal in Horonai, Mikasa, Hokkaidō, Mikasa (三笠). History The name ''Bibai'' is derived from Ainu word "pipa o i", meaning "Place (swamp) with many cockscomb pearl mussels". *1890 - The village of Numakai was founded. *1925 - Numakai village became Numakai town. *1926 - Numakai was renamed Bibai. *1950 - Bibai town became Bibai city. *1982 - Bibai Dam was completed. At its peak, Bibai was a coal town that produced over a million tons annually. However, ever since the mine was closed in 1972, the city has suffered a slowly declining population. Kamisunagawa, Hokkaido
is a town located in Sorachi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. As of September 2016, the town has an estimated population of 3,278. The total area is 39.91 km2. There is a microgravity test facility located in Kamisunagawa used for astronomic purposes. Since 1980, Kamisunagawa has been the sister city of Sparwood in British Columbia, Canada.
