''Isabella in Red'' (also called ''Portrait of the Aged Isabella d'Este'') is a portrait of a woman by Peter Paul Rubens in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. It is considered a close copy of a lost Titian original. Description The knee-piece shows a somewhat chubby middle-aged woman in a red velvet dress in front of a turquoise background. On her head she wears a balzo, a fashionable invention of Isabella d'Este (from 1509), which was widely used in northern Italy in the 1530s. Personal features are reddish-brown curls, brown eyes and classically arched eyebrows. History At the beginning of the 17th century, Rubens was a court painter in Mantua. ''Isabella in Black'' (also called ''Portrait of Isabella d'Este'') is a portrait of a young woman by Titian. It can be dated to the 1530s and is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The artist and the date are undisputed. Beyond the museum documentation, there are repeated doubts about the person depicted. Description Depicted is a young woman as a half figure in a chair with an armrest against a dark background. She stares slightly to the left. Personal features are light blond curls, the (rare) eye colour light grey, flat eyebrows and a snub nose — overall not representing the ideal of beauty. Lorenzo Costa
Lorenzo Costa (1460 – 5 March 1535) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. Biography He was born at Ferrara, but moved to Bologna by his early twenties, and was probably influenced by the Bolognese School. However, many artists worked in both cities, and thus some consider him a product of the School of Ferrara. It is possible that he trained with Cosimo Tura. In 1483 he painted the famous ''Bentivoglio Altarpiece'' and other frescoes on the walls of the Bentivoglio chapel in San Giacomo Maggiore. He was a great friend of Francesco Francia, who was much influenced by him. In 1509 he moved to Mantua to become the court painter of Marquis Francesco Gonzaga and Isabella d'Este. For the latter's studiolo in the Ducal Palace, he painted the ''Allegory of Isabella d'Este's Coronation'' (now at the Louvre) and the '' Reign of Comus'', two mythological paintings based on Mantegna's drawings. ''Madonna with Child in Arms'', Frari, Venice Bernardino Licinio (c. 1489 in Poscante – 1565) was an Italian High Renaissance painter of Venice and Lombardy. He mainly painted portraits and religious canvases. Life Bernardino was the second son of ser Antonio Licino, part of a family from the municipality of Poscante in Bergamo. The first son was Arrigo or Rigo, the third (Zuane Battista) became a priest of the church of San Cassiano in Venice and the fourth (Niccolò) was also a parish priest of the church of San Biagio in Venice. From the information about his brothers, it can be deduced that Bernardino was born around 1489. In 1511 it appears he was already orphaned by his father and working as a painter. The Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco is an art gallery in the museum complex of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, northern Italy. Paris Bordone (Paris Paschalinus Bordone; 5 July 1500 – 19 January 1571) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance who, despite training with Titian, maintained a strand of Mannerism, Mannerist complexity and provincial vigor. Biography Bordone was born in Treviso, but had moved to Venice by late adolescence. He apprenticed briefly and unhappily (according to Vasari) with Titian. Vasari may have met the elder Bordone.
