Isaac Scott Nind
Isaac Scott Nind (1797–1868) was an early colonial doctor, artist and pharmacist. He qualified LAC (Licentiate of the Apothecaries Company) in London on 13 July 1820. He arrived in New South Wales in 1826. Within three weeks of his arrival he was appointed an Assistant Colonial Surgeon and sailed with the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot under Major Edmund Lockyer on the Amity to establish a convict-supported military garrison at King George Sound on Australia's south-west coast. While there he compiled a Nyoongar vocabulary Suffering from depression, he returned to Sydney in 1829, and then to London. 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment Of Foot
The 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1702. Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot to form the Dorsetshire Regiment in 1881. History Early years The regiment was first raised by Adam Loftus, 1st Viscount Lisburne as Viscount Lisburne's Regiment of Foot in 1689 but was disbanded in 1697. It was re-raised in Ireland, without lineal connection to the previous regiment, by Colonel Richard Coote as Richard Coote's Regiment of Foot in August 1702. Major Edmund Lockyer
Edmund Lockyer, (21 January 1784 – 10 June 1860) was a British soldier and explorer of Australia. Born in Plymouth, Devon, Lockyer was the son of Thomas Lockyer, a sailmaker, and his wife Ann. Lockyer began his army career as an ensign in the 19th Regiment in June 1803, was promoted lieutenant in early 1805 and made captain in August 1805. Lockyer was promoted to major in August 1819 and in August 1824 transferred to the 57th Regiment. Lockyer arrived at Sydney, capital of the British Colony of New South Wales, aboard the ''Royal Charlotte'' in April 1825 with men from the 57th; also with his wife and ten children. In August 1825, Lockyer was instructed by Governor Sir Thomas Brisbane to lead an expedition to explore the upper reaches of the Brisbane River. Amity (brig)
''Amity'' was a 148-ton brig used in several notable voyages of exploration and settlement in Australia in the early nineteenth century. She was built in New Brunswick in 1816 and for some years was used as a merchant vessel trading between America and Britain before being brought to Australia in 1824. Van Diemen's Land ''Amity'' was built as a brig of 148 tons and was launched at St John's, New Brunswick, in 1816. In 1823 she was purchased by the Scottish Ralston Family to be fitted out for their emigration to Van Diemen's Land. King George Sound
King George Sound ( nys , Menang Koort) is a sound on the south coast of Western Australia. Named King George the Third's Sound in 1791, it was referred to as King George's Sound from 1805. The name "King George Sound" gradually came into use from about 1934, prompted by new Admiralty charts supporting the intention to eliminate the possessive 's' from geographical names. The sound covers an area of and varies in depth from . Situated at its western shore is the city of Albany. Paterson, New South Wales
Paterson is a small township in the lower Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. Located within Dungog Shire, it is situated on the Paterson River. Commissioner Of Crown Lands (Australia)
The Commissioner of Crown Lands was a government official who was appointed to administer crown (government) land in the various Australian colonies. In New South Wales, from 1836, each land district had its own Commissioner of Crown Lands reporting to a Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands. From 1839, each commissioner had responsibilities in relation to the Border Police of New South Wales and, depending on the land district, was sometimes involved in frontier violence and suppression of local Aboriginal people. The position of Chief Commissioner lapsed in 1878 and the commissioners' positions were abolished around 1880.
