Isaac Joseph
Isaac Joseph (born 19 September 1975) is a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a New Generation Party member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from July 2007 until 2012, representing the electorate of Mendi Open. Joseph was a church pastor before entering politics. He was elected to the open seat vacated by Michael Nali, who made an unsuccessful attempt to shift to the Southern Highlands Regional seat. New Generation Party (Papua New Guinea)
The New Generation Party is a political party in Papua New Guinea. It was established in 2006 by former Treasurer Bart Philemon and Lae businessman Bob Sinclair. It pledged to abolish provincial governments and administrators and ban the export of whole logs, switching to downstream processing of timber in Papua New Guinea. It stated that it would not work with the government of Michael Somare, and allied with Mekere Morauta's Papua New Guinea Party. It won four seats at the 2007 election, with Philemon becoming deputy opposition leader under Morauta. The party passed into government when Peter O'Neill ousted Somare in August 2011, and O'Neill appointed Philemon as Minister for Public Service in the new government. During the campaign for the 2012 election, Philemon argued that former Prime Ministers Julius Chan, Paias Wingti and Michael Somare should retire to allow for younger leadership. The National Parliament of Papua New Guinea is the unicameral national legislature in Papua New Guinea. It was created in 1964 as the House of Assembly of Papua and New Guinea but gained its current name after the nation was granted independence in 1975. The 111 members of parliament serve five-year terms, 89 of whom are chosen from single-member "open" electorates, which are sometimes referred to as "seats" but are officially known as constituencies. The remaining 22 are chosen from single-member provincial electorates: the 20 provinces, the autonomous province of Bougainville (North Solomons), and the National Capital District. Each provincial member becomes governor of their province unless they take a ministerial position, in which case the governorship passes to an open member of the province. The ''Papua New Guinea Post-Courier'' is a newspaper based in Konedobu, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. It was established on 30 June 1969. Its parent company, The Herald and Weekly Times (later purchased by News Corp Australia), had acquired what had then been the two main newspapers in Papua New Guinea, the three-days-a-week ''South Pacific Post'' and the twice-weekly ''New Guinea Times Courier'', and decided to amalgamate them into one publication. It was the first national daily newspaper in Papua New Guinea. Luke Sela was editor from 1978 to 2000. With a circulation of 41,000, the ''Post-Courier'' is the largest selling Pacific Island newspaper. The paper is majority owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Michael Nali
Michael Nali Order of the British Empire, CBE (born 1961) is a Papua New Guinean politician. He was the leader of the People's Progress Party from 2002 to 2007 and was Member of National Parliament of Papua New Guinea, Parliament for the electorate of Mendi Open, in Southern Highlands Province, from 1992 until 2007. During this period he held various ministerial positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry. At the 2007 Papua New Guinean general election, 2007 general election he chose to contest the Southern Highlands Provincial electorate, which was won by Anderson Agiru. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours. Mekere Morauta
The Right Honourable Sir Mekere Morauta (12 June 1946 – 19 December 2020) was a Papua New Guinean politician and economist who served as the 7th Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from 1999 to 2002. Inheriting a depressed economy and a fractious legislature, he embarked on fundamental reforms of the country's economy and political system. Before entering politics, Morauta led the post-independence process of building financial infrastructure in Papua New Guinea as Secretary of Finance, Managing Director of the state-owned Papua New Guinea Banking Corporation, and Governor of the central bank. As a member of parliament, he represented Port Moresby North West from 1997 until 2012, and again from 2017 until his death in 2020. Mendi, Papua New Guinea, is the provincial capital of the Southern Highlands Province. The Lai River flows by the town. It is served by Mendi Airport. The town falls under Mendi Urban LLG. Geography The town is located in the Mendi River Valley, above sea level, on the limestone hills from west to east. De Kewanu (born 7 June 1965) is a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 2012 to 2017, representing the electorate of Mendi Open, firstly as an independent (2012) then the Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party (2013-2014) and then finally shifted to the People's National Congress (2014–present). He was Vice-Minister for Works and Implementation in the government of Peter O'Neill. Kewanu was an accountant who ran a successful accounting practice in PNG known as HLB Niugini before entering politics. He also had a run for election in 1997 but was unsuccessful.
