Ironbank-Cherry Gardens Football Club
The Hills Football League (HFL) is an Australian rules football league, situated in the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia, to the south east of the state capital Adelaide. The League has over 3000 players belonging to 20 member Clubs. The League's Clubs are divided into two playing Divisions - Division 1 (Formerly Central Division - mostly the larger towns in the Hills region); - Division 2 (Formerly Country Division - the remaining clubs in the region). Both divisions have their own programs for the season. There is a promotion and relegation system that received criticism in 2014 following the ultimately unsuccessful decision to relegate Echunga in the same season that they won the Central Division premiership. It is the second biggest league in South Australia after the South Australian Amateur Football League. Birdwood, South Australia
Birdwood is a town near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the local government areas of the Adelaide Hills Council and the Mid Murray Council. History Origin of the name Birdwood was originally named ''Blumberg'', by Prussian settlers originating from the area around Zullichau. The original name's origins are uncertain, but it is likely that it derives from Groß Blumberg, a village on the Oder River in the settler's area of origin. The German town name was anglicised to "Birdwood" during World War I, along with many others in the region in 1917. The new name honoured Sir William Birdwood, the Australian Imperial Force general who led the ANZACs at Gallipoli. Around the same time, the government closed the German-language school. European settlement The first Europeans to explore the district were Dr. George Imlay and John Hill in January 1838.
