Irish PGA Championship
The Irish PGA Championship, formerly the Irish Professional Championship and colloquially known as the Irish Professional Close or National Championship, is a golf tournament that is played annually in Ireland since 1907. It is one of the oldest golf tournaments in the world, the oldest in the country, and has been played at many different golf courses in Ireland. It is the marquee event on the PGA Tour of Ireland's schedule, having many notable winners in the over 100 years of play. Christy O'Connor Snr and Harry Bradshaw have the most wins in the event with 10. The event was played in match-play format from its inauguration in 1907 until it became a stroke play event in 1910. Robert Hartmann Giles (June 6, 1933 – August 7, 2023) was an American newspaper editor and publisher who was the curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. Early life and education Giles graduated from DePauw University in 1955 and received his master's degree in 1956 from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Career Giles was a Nieman Fellow in 1966 and a Gannett Professional-in-Residence at the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. During his newspaper career, he served as managing editor of ''The Akron Beacon Journal'', executive editor of ''The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle'', and editor and publisher of ''The Detroit News''. Philip Walton
Philip Joseph Walton (born 28 March 1962) is an Irish professional golfer. Walton attended Oklahoma State University in the United States and played for Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup in 1981 and 1983. According to Ronan Rafferty, Walton had the best handicap in the Republic of Ireland as an amateur. He turned professional in 1983 and spent many years on the European Tour, making the top one hundred on the Order of Merit every year from 1983 to 1998, with a best ranking of thirteenth in 1995. He has won three European Tour events and four Irish PGA Championships. Walton has represented Ireland or Great Britain & Ireland on many occasions. He was a member of the winning Irish team at the 1990 Alfred Dunhill Cup. Pádraig Peter Harrington (born 31 August 1971) is an Irish professional golfer who plays on the European Tour, PGA Tour and the PGA Tour Champions. He has won three major championships: The Open Championship in 2007 and 2008 and the PGA Championship, also in 2008. Noel Murray (golfer)
Marie and Noel Murray were an anarchist married couple who were among the last people to be sentenced to death in the Republic of Ireland. The couple were convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in June 1976 for the murder of Garda Michael Reynolds the previous September. The sentences led to an outcry and a campaign to stop the executions received international attention. The sentences were quashed and the pair were convicted of common murder. Gary Murphy
Gary Murphy (born 15 October 1972) is an Irish professional golfer. Career Murphy was born in Kilkenny and began playing golf aged 11, after caddying for his father, Jim, who has played an instrumental role in the development of young golfers. He won the Irish Amateur Close Championship in 1992. He turned professional in 1995. He won the Asian Tour qualifying school in 1997, and played two seasons on that tour. In addition, he competed on the second tier European Challenge Tour, before returning to Europe full-time, after winning a European Tour card at the 1999 final qualifying school. Murphy was unable to secure his place on the European Tour in his rookie season and dropped back down to the Challenge Tour in 2001 and 2002. He regained his European Tour card at the end of 2002 at final qualifying school.
