Irish Animation Awards
The ''Irish Animation Awards'', for which the winners receive a statuette in the shape of a phenakistoscope, an early animation device, were first held on 13 March 2015 in Dingle, County Kerry. The statuette was designed by animator, film maker and teacher Eimhin McNamara. The judges included CBBC, Nickelodeon and CBeebies The second award ceremony took place on 25 March 2017. Winners included ''Song of the Sea'' as best Irish feature film and Jam Media, whose ''Roy'', won the ''Kids’ Choice Award'' for best animated series. The best music/sound design award was given to '' Danger Mouse''. Phenakistoscope
The phenakistiscope (also known by the spellings phénakisticope or phenakistoscope) was the first widespread animation device that created a fluent illusion of motion. Dubbed and ('stroboscopic discs') by its inventors, it has been known under many other names until the French product name became common (with alternative spellings). The phenakistiscope is regarded as one of the first forms of moving media entertainment that paved the way for the future motion picture and film industry. Like a GIF animation, it can only show a short continuous loop. Etymology and spelling When it was introduced in the French newspaper ''Le Figaro'' in June 1833, the term 'phénakisticope' was explained to be from the root Greek word ''phenakistikos'' (or rather from φενακίζειν ''phenakizein''), meaning "deceiving" or "cheating", and ὄψ ''óps'', meaning "eye" or "face", so it was probably intended loosely as 'optical deception' or 'optical illusion'. Paul Young (producer)
Paul Young is the CEO of Cartoon Saloon, a four-times nominated Academy award and BAFTA nominated Irish animation studio. He co-founded the studio in 1999 with Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey. Young is also a producer and an award-winning illustrator and cartoonist. In 2015 he was a finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He is on the board of Animation Ireland. Education Whilst travelling, having completed a degree in Art and Design at the University of Ulster, Young discovered he could make more money selling caricatures to tourists on the beach than selling sandwiches and was inspired to pursue animation as a career, enrolling on the animation degree course at Ballyfermot College of Further Education in Dublin on his return. Animation is a method by which still figures are manipulated to appear as moving images. In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted by hand on transparent celluloid sheets to be photographed and exhibited on film. The ''Business Post'' (formerly ''The Sunday Business Post'') is a Sunday newspaper distributed nationally in Ireland and an online publication. It is focused mainly on business and financial issues in Ireland. Cartoon Saloon is an Irish animation film, short film and television studio based in Kilkenny which provides film TV and short film services. The studio is best known for its animated feature films ''The Secret of Kells'', ''Song of the Sea'', '' The Breadwinner'' and ''Wolfwalkers''. Their works have received five Academy Award nominations, their first four feature length works all received nominations for Best Animated Feature and one for Best Animated Short Film ('' Late Afternoon''). The company also developed the cartoon series ''Skunk Fu!'', ''Puffin Rock'', ''Dorg Van Dango'' and ''Vikingskool''. As of 2020, the studio employs 300 animators. Danger Mouse (2015 TV Series)
''Danger Mouse'' is an animated television series, produced by FremantleMedia and Boulder Media, though it started being produced by Boat Rocker Media in 2018 after they acquired FremantleMedia Kids & Family. The series, which is a revival of the 1981 television series of the same name, revolves around Danger Mouse, the self-proclaimed "World's Greatest Secret Agent", and his hamster sidekick Penfold, who protect the world from a variety of dangers. With help from his boss Colonel K and the genius scientist Professor Squawkencluck, Danger Mouse is equipped to defeat his nemesis, Baron Silas von Greenback. Dingle (Irish language, Irish: ''An Daingean'' or ''Daingean Uí Chúis'', meaning "fort of Ó Cúis") is a town in County Kerry, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The only town on the Dingle Peninsula, it sits on the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic coast, about southwest of Tralee and northwest of Killarney. ''Song of the Sea'' ( ga, Amhrán na Mara) is a 2014 animated fantasy film directed and co-produced by Tomm Moore, co-produced by Ross Murray, Paul Young, Stephen Roelants, Serge and Marc Ume, Isabelle Truc, Clement Calvet, Jeremie Fajner, Frederik Villumsen, and Claus Toksvig Kjaer, and written by Will Collins from Moore's story.
