Irena Degutienė
Irena Degutienė (born 1 June 1949) is a Lithuanian politician and member of the conservative Homeland Union. She is currently the Deputy Speaker of Seimas, and was twice the acting Prime Minister of Lithuania, first from 4 May 1999 to 18 May 1999 and then from 27 October 1999 to 3 November 1999. She has also been the Speaker of Seimas from 15 September 2009 to 14 September 2012, as well as Minister for Social Security and Labour from 1996 to 2000. In 1978, she graduated from Vilnius University with a degree in medicine. For almost twenty years, she worked in Vilnius Red Cross Hospital before becoming a secretary in the Ministry of Health in 1994. She was initially elected to Seimas in 1996. Degutienė is the first woman to be Speaker of Seimas in Lithuania's history. Seimas
The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania ( lt, Lietuvos Respublikos Seimas), or simply the Seimas (), is the unicameral parliament of Lithuania. The Seimas constitutes the legislative branch of government in Lithuania, enacting laws and amendments to the Constitution, passing the budget, confirming the Prime Minister and the Government and controlling their activities. Its 141 members are elected for a four-year term, with 71 elected in individual constituencies, and 70 elected in a nationwide vote based on open list proportional representation. A party must receive at least 5%, and a multi-party union at least 7%, of the national vote to qualify for the proportional representation seats. Žygimantas Pavilionis (born 22 July 1971 in Vilnius) is a Lithuanian politician, Member of the Seimas, former Lithuanian diplomat. The State Security Department or VSD ( lt, Valstybės saugumo departamentas) is a Lithuanian intelligence agency which collects information on threats to the national security and works to eliminate those threats. Eligijus Masiulis (born 15 October 1974) is a former Lithuanian politician. He has represented Liberal Movement party from 2008 to 2016. From 2008 to 2012 he was Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania. In May 2016 Liberal Movement leader Masiulis stepped down after €106k bribe allegations from MG Baltic, one of the largest business groups in the Baltic countries. Antanas Guoga, was made the temporary leader of the Liberal Movement following the potential bribery scandal that prompted Eligijus Masiulis to step down. History Of Lithuania
The history of Lithuania dates back to settlements founded many thousands of years ago, but the first written record of the name for the country dates back to 1009 AD. Lithuanians, one of the Baltic peoples, later conquered neighboring lands and established the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 13th century (and also a short-lived Kingdom of Lithuania). The Grand Duchy was a successful and lasting warrior state. It remained fiercely independent and was one of the last areas of Europe to adopt Christianity (beginning in the 14th century). A formidable power, it became the largest state in Europe in the 15th century through the conquest of large groups of East Slavs who resided in Ruthenia. In 1385, the Grand Duchy formed a dynastic union with Poland through the Union of Krewo. The Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats ( lt, Tėvynės sąjunga Lietuvos krikščionys demokratai, TS–LKD), also known colloquially simply as the Conservatives, is a centre-right political party in Lithuania. It has 18,000 members and 49 of 141 seats in the Seimas. It is the main centre-right party, with an ideology influenced by liberal conservatism, Christian democracy, nationalism and economic liberalism.
