Ireland In The Eurovision Song Contest 1994
After winning the 1992 and 1993 contests with female soloists, Ireland selected Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan to represent them in 1994. Before Eurovision National final The national final was held in the University Concert Hall in Limerick on 13 March 1994. TV broadcaster and Eurovision Song Contest 1988 co-presenter Pat Kenny hosted the event. The eight songs presented were then voted on by ten regional juries. Charlie McGettigan had previously competed in Ireland's national final selection in 1984 and 1987, placing third both times. At Eurovision "Rock 'n' Roll Kids" was performed third in the running order on the night of the contest, following Finland and preceding Cyprus. The song went on to win the contest with 226 points, a 60-point lead over runner-up Poland. This was Ireland's third win in a row, and sixth overall. Paul Harrington (musician)
Paul Harrington (born 13 May 1960) is an Irish musician, who, with Charlie McGettigan, won the Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland in 1994. Career Music Harrington was born in Dublin, Republic of Ireland.He attended O'Connells secondary School, North Circular Road Dublin. He first came to public attention with his debut album, ''What I'd Say'', reaching the Top 10 in 1991. However, that attention reached new heights in 1994 when he represented Ireland and won the Eurovision Song Contest along with Charlie McGettigan. In the late 1990s, Harrington was the performer of choice for many of the A-list celebrities that would frequent the VIP Room in Dublin's most prestigious nightspot at the time, Lillie's bordello, here he would regularly entertain and be joined by, stars from the world of music, film, and television. Charlie McGettigan
Charles Joseph McGettigan (born 7 December 1950, Ballyshannon, County Donegal) is an Irish singer. He lives in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim. Career Performing with Paul Harrington, he won the Eurovision Song Contest 1994 with the song "Rock 'n' Roll Kids" (words and music by Brendan Graham). Harrington played piano and McGettigan played guitar. He made an appearance as a guest singer at Congratulations, the 50th anniversary concert of Eurovision. In August 1998, McGettigan's only son, Shane McGettigan, was killed in a construction accident while working in Quincy, Massachusetts. "Rock 'n' Roll Kids" is a song by Paul Harrington (musician), Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan that was the winning song of the Eurovision Song Contest 1994, written by Brendan Graham and performed for . The song was Ireland's sixth overall victory, and represented an unprecedented third consecutive time that the same country had won the contest. There was a myth among Irish media that the song was deliberately chosen ''not'' to win. Brendan Graham
Brendan Graham (born 1945) is an Irish songwriter and novelist. Among songs he has written are "Rock 'n' Roll Kids" (1994) and "The Voice" (1996), both of which won the Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland in their respective years, and "You Raise Me Up" (2002), which was an international hit as covered by various artists, including Josh Groban. Early life Graham was born in Nenagh County Tipperary. Songwriting Brendan Graham is one of Ireland's most famous lyricists and songwriters. Patrick Kenny (born 29 January 1948) is an Irish broadcaster, who currently hosts the daily radio show ''The Pat Kenny Show'' on Newstalk and the current affairs show ''Pat Kenny Tonight'' on Virgin Media One. Darren Holden (born 4 July 1972) is an Irish singer-songwriter who has performed on Broadway as part of ''Riverdance'' and '' Movin' Out'' and in the national tours for both shows.
