Ireland At The 1948 Summer Olympics
Ireland competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England. It was the first time that the country had competed in the Summer Olympics since 1932. A dispute between rival Irish Athletics governing bodies saw many Irish athletes barred from taking part in the Athletics competitions. 72 competitors, 68 men and 4 women, took part in 32 events in 9 sports. Athletics Basketball Ireland made their only Olympic basketball appearance to date, losing all five of their games and finishing last of 23 teams. The Olympic Federation of Ireland or OFI ( ga, Cónaidhm Oilimpeach na hÉireann) (called the Irish Olympic Council until 1952 and the Olympic Council of Ireland until 2018) is the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the island of Ireland. Athletes from Northern Ireland have the option of participating under its auspices or in the Great Britain Olympic Team. Dorothy Dermody
Dorothy "Tommy" Dermody (26 April 1909 – 10 April 2012) was an Irish people, Irish fencing, fencer from County Tipperary. She competed in the women's individual foil (fencing), foil event at the 1948 Summer Olympics. When she died she was, at age 102, Ireland's oldest living Olympian and the oldest living Olympic fencer in the world. Family life Dorothy Dermody was born on 26 April 1909, the daughter of William Dermody and Julia Rose Elizabeth Edith Mary (Evens) Dermody. She was the sister of George William Victor Dermody (born 22 January 1901 in County Tipperary, Tipperary) and Ronald Desmond Dermody (born 18 May 1905 in Kilmullen, County Laois). Her father, William, was born in about 1865 in Ireland and was a ship's captain. He married Julia on 5 January 1900 in County Tipperary, Tipperary. Morgan McElligott
Morgan McElligott (21 June 1925 – 16 February 2016) was an Irish rower and cardiologist. He competed in the men's eight event at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Biography McElligott was born in Rathdown, Dublin in 1925. He gained a medical degree while studying at the University College Dublin. In 1948, he was part of the team that won the All-Ireland Senior Rowing Championship. At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, McElligott was part of the Irish team that competed in the men's eight. Two years after the Olympics, he started his medical career in Dublin, and moved to London three years after that. After six years later, McElligott returned to Ireland, becoming a consultant at Portiuncula Hospital. He spent more than three decades working at the hospital, where he worked in cardiology and helped to found the very first cardiac care unit in Portiuncula. Daniel Brumhall Cochrane Taylor (13 May 1921 – 31 December 2003) was an Irish scientist, university vice-chancellor, and Olympic rower. Early life Taylor was born on 13 May 1921 in Portstewart, Northern Ireland. His parents were Daniel Brumhall Taylor and Anna Martha Taylor ( Rice). He received his education at Coleraine Academical Institution and Queen's University Belfast (QUB). From QUB, he graduated BSc (Mech) in 1942, BSc (Elec) in 1943, MSc in 1946, and obtained his PhD in 1948. In 1956, he graduated MA from the University of Cambridge. Taylor was a member of the Queen's University Belfast Boat Club. He competed in the men's eight event at the 1948 Summer Olympics where the team was eliminated in the repechage.
