Iraqi Navy
The Iraqi Naval Forces (Arabic: القوات البحرية العراقية), or the Iraqi Navy is the naval warfare service branch of the Armed forces of Iraq. Formed in 1937, initially as the ''Iraqi Coastal Defense Force,'' its primary responsibilities was the protection of Iraq's coastline and offshore assets, the official name was changed on 12 January 2005 to Iraqi Naval Forces As of February 2021, the navy had approximately 3,000 sailors and marines which form an Operational headquarters, five afloat squadrons, and two marine battalions. Headed by Rear Admiral Muhammad Jawad, the navy had plans to build six ''Al Uboor''-class patrol boats in Baghdad, with the first of the boats to enter service in September 2005. Brown-water Navy
The term brown-water navy or riverine navy refers in its broadest sense to any navy, naval force capable of military operations in littoral zone waters. The term originated in the United States Navy during the American Civil War, when it referred to Union (American Civil War), Union forces patrolling the muddy Mississippi River, and has since been used to describe the small gunboats and patrol boats commonly used in rivers, along with the larger "mother ships" that supported them. Rigid-hulled Inflatable Boat
A rigid inflatable boat (RIB), also rigid-hull inflatable boat or rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB), is a lightweight but high-performance and high-capacity boat constructed with a rigid hull bottom joined to side-forming air tubes that are inflated with air to a high pressure so as to give the sides resilient rigidity along the boat's topsides. Diciotti Class
The ''Diciotti'' class is an Italian-designed offshore patrol vessel, presently in use with the Italian Coast Guard, Iraqi Navy, Armed Forces of Malta and Panama SENAN. A corvette is a small warship. It is traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a proper (or " rated") warship. Assad Class Corvette
The Assad-class corvette were originally built for Iraq during the Iran–Iraq War, by Fincantieri in Italy. Six ships were ordered in 1981. They were completed just before Operation Desert Storm, and were never delivered due to embargoes by the Italian government. Four of the six ships were sold to the Malaysian Navy as s in 1995. The two remaining ships were laid up in La Spezia from 1990, but in 2005 it was announced they would be delivered to the New Iraqi Navy. The deal, however was later cancelled due to the condition of the ships upon inspection. On 19 May 2017, it was reported that the remaining two vessels would be delivered to the Iraq Navy after 26 years. Al Uboor Class Patrol Boat
The Al-Uboor class is a class of patrol boats of the Iraqi Navy. Acquisition On 17 February 2005 a contract was signed for six new Iraqi Navy ships to be built in Iraq and in support of the local Baghdad economy. The first of the ships, called the ''Al Uboor''-class patrol boats, was to enter service in six months with the last of them hitting the water 18 months from the signing. Construction had begun before Operation Iraqi Freedom, but the new contract saw the ships completed to a revised design. Funded by the Interim Iraqi Government's 2005 defense budget, they cost approximately $15 million. The ships will patrol Iraqi territorial waters.
