IraQueer
IraQueer ( ar, عراق کویر, ku, عیڕاق کویر) is an Iraqi non-governmental organization based in Sweden advocating for LGBT rights in Iraq. It was founded in 2015. The organization undertakes education, advocacy, and direct services. IraQueer offers direct services that respond to urgent needs including safe housing, and supporting asylum seekers. IraQueer also responds to United Nations reports, and holds events. The organization has partnered with local and international organizations including OutRight Action International, MADRE, COC Nederland, and Gay Times. It has also generated backlash from inside the country and has been renounced by Iraqi government officials. IraQueer is not registered in Iraq because LGBT organisations cannot register there, and is forced for security reasons to carry out most work anonymously. Amir Ashour
Amir Ashour (Arabic: أمير عاشور; born ) is an Iraqi LGBT rights activist who founded IraQueer, a non-governmental organisation that advocates for the rights of LGBT rights in Iraq, LGBT people in Iraq, in 2015. Personal life Ashour was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and raised in Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan Region. Ashour was raised practicing Islam, though stopped following the religion in 2008, stating "Islam didn't work for me". In 2014, after being arrested twice due to his work in the human rights sector, Ashour requested asylum in Sweden while there on a business trip; in 2015, he was granted political asylum. As of 2016, Ashour lives in Malmö. Ashour graduated from Columbia University in New York City with a master's degree in human rights in 2018. As of 2021, Ashour is a student at Harvard Law School. LGBT Activism In Iraq
Iraqi Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans (LGBT) activism refers to any work done to advance the state of LGBT peoples in political, cultural, or home safety. The Iraq government has maintained an anti-LGBT stance since gaining independence in 1932 where homosexuality was officially banned. This would be expanded in the IRCC Resolution 234 of 2001 which would punish sodomy, or any homosexual act, with the death penalty. Rasan (organization)
Rasan (; ; ) is a Kurdish non-governmental human rights organization that was established in 2004 in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region, Iraq. Rasan focuses on LGBT rights and women's rights. The organization runs projects that focus on coexistence and social cohesion through the use of arts, social awareness, focus groups, livelihood projects, seminars, workshops, training, and action plans. Rasan engages community leaders from different sectors in community forums on gender identity, equality and coexistence. Initially, Rasan was a feminist women's rights organization between 2004 and 2012 but in 2012 they expanded their scope to human rights issues related to the LGBT community, making them the first registered organization in Iraq to publicly advocate for the LGBT community. Zhiar Ali (Kurdish: ; Sorani alphabet: , , born ) is a former animal rights activist and a Kurdish advocate for LGBT rights. He presently resides in the Netherlands after having been based in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq. In Iraqi Kurdistan, Ali is well known for his contributions to LGBT rights, including founding Yeksani, a group that works to promote LGBT rights in the Kurdistan Region. He is currently Yeksani's executive director and was a founding member of Kurdistan Vegans, Iraq's first pro-vegan animal rights group. Additionally, he has worked as a freelance journalist for news outlets, specialising in music journalism as well as political and social concerns. Al Sharqiya ("The Eastern One") ( ar, الشرقية) is Iraq's first privately owned satellite channel owned by the London, Baghdad and Dubai-based Iraqi media tycoon Saad al-Bazzaz, is a well-known sunni political opponent from Mosul. Al-Bazzaz is also the Editor in Chief of the Azzaman newspaper. The station was launched in March 2004 and began regular transmission on 4 May 2004. The Shia militias used to call the channel, Al-Baathiya (Baathist), due to the relationship of Saad Al-Bazzaz with the former Baathist president Saddam Hussein.
