Iowa Senate Elections, 2006
The 2006 Iowa Senate election was held on November 7, 2006. The Senate seats for the twenty-five odd-numbered districts were up for election. Senate terms are staggered such that half the membership is elected every two years. Senators serve four-year terms. Prior to the election, the Senate was evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats. Following the election, the Democrats were in the majority - this marked the first time in 42 years that the Democrats had controlled both branches of the Iowa General Assembly and the Governor's Office. Iowa State Senate
The Iowa Senate is the upper house of the Iowa General Assembly, United States. There are 50 seats in the Iowa Senate, representing 50 single-member districts across the state of Iowa with populations of approximately 60,927 per constituency, . Each Senate district is composed of two House districts. The Senate meets at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. Unlike the lower house, the Iowa House of Representatives, Senators serve four-year terms, with no term limits. Terms are staggered so that half the Senate is up for reelection every two years. Leadership The President of the Senate presides over the body, whose powers include referring bills to committee, recognizing members during debate, and making procedural rulings. Unlike the more powerful Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives, the Senate President cannot appoint committee chairmanships or shuffle committee memberships. Richard Warren "Rich" Olive (December 2, 1949 – June 20, 2016) was an American realtor and politician from Iowa. A Democrat, he served the Fifth District in the Iowa Senate from 2007 until 2011. Olive served on several committees in the Iowa Senate: the Commerce committee; the Agriculture committee, where he was vice chair; the Economic Growth committee, where he was vice chair; and the Government Oversight committee, where he was chair. Olive was elected in 2006 with 11,224 votes (50%), defeating Republican opponent James Kurtenbach. Nancy Boettger
Nancy Jane Boettger (born May 1, 1943) was the Iowa State Senator from the 9th District. A Republican, she served in the Iowa Senate since 1995. She received a B.A. in Sociology from Iowa State University in 1965 and a B.A. from Buena Vista College in Education in 1982. Boettger served on several committees in the Iowa Senate: the Agriculture committee; the Appropriations committee; the Human Resources committee; the Judiciary committee; the Rules and Administration committee; and the Education committee, where she was the ranking member. She also served as the ranking member of the Education Appropriations Subcommittee. Boettger was re-elected in 2006 with 14,474 votes, running unopposed. She left office in 2015. Daryl Beall (born December 11, 1946) is an American politician. He was the Iowa State Senator from the 5th District. A Democrat, he served in the Iowa Senate from 2003 to 2015, in Iowa Senate district 25 before Iowa's 2012 redistricting. He received his A.A. from Iowa Central Community College, his B.A. from Buena Vista University, and his MPA from Drake University. Beall served on several committees in the Iowa Senate - the Economic Growth committee; the Education committee; the Local Government committee, where he is vice chair; the Transportation committee, where he is vice chair; and the Veterans Affairs committee, where he is chair. Dennis H. Black (born December 18, 1939) is a former Democratic politician, from Lynnville Iowa. Black holds a bachelor's degree in forest management and a master's degree in natural resource economics from Utah State University. He was an author of The Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) Fund while chairing the House Natural Resources Committee in Iowa's 73rd General Assembly. Black's career includes work as a natural resource analyst and consultant, service as the director of the Jasper County Conservation Board from 1970 to 2005, and the author of numerous natural resource management publications. LaMetta Wynn (August 4, 1933 – June 24, 2021) was the mayor of Clinton, Iowa from 1995 to 2007. She was the first African-American woman to hold the position of mayor in any Iowa municipality.
