Iowa Highway 46
Iowa Highway 46 (Iowa 46) was a state highway (Iowa), state highway in Polk County, Iowa. It began at an intersection with Iowa Highway 5, Iowa 5 near Avon, Iowa, Avon. It traveled north and west through the industrial section of southeastern Des Moines, Iowa, Des Moines. It ended at Iowa Highway 163, Iowa 163, also known as E. University Avenue, in Des Moines next to the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The route was created in 1953 when a section of Iowa 60 was rerouted through Des Moines. Maintenance of the highway was turned over to local jurisdictions in 1998, after a new, controlled-access bypass (road), bypass carrying U.S. Route 65 in Iowa, US 65 opened nearby and after the bridge over the Des Moines River was removed. Minimum speed limits were removed from the bypass after the Iowa 46 bridge closed because of a lack of river crossings for farm implements. Avon is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Polk County, Iowa, Polk County, Iowa, United States. History The original townsite of Avon was platted by Charles Keeney in either 1855, or 1856. Nearby Avon Lake, one mile southeast, was founded when the railroad bypassed Avon. At Avon's founding, it was the only village in Allen Township, Polk County, Iowa, Allen Township, and enjoyed several early years of prosperity. It had a large hotel, a United Bretheren church, several stores, and more than 20 houses. The Avon post office began operations in 1857. Avon's population was 6 in 1900, 11 in 1925, and 18 in 1925.
