Ionică Minune
Gheorghe Ene (born February 13, 1959), known as Ionică Minune, is a Romani-Romanian accordionist. Life and career Ionică Minune was born in Costeşti, Buzău County, Romania into a family of '' lăutari''. The members of his family played different instruments and they used to be booked together as one ''taraf'' (band) at various events in the village. At the age of four, Ionică took his older brother accordion and played a waltz by ear without any kind of training. Since then he continued to play and practice, mostly for his own pleasure, as he didn't want to become a professional musician. As a teenager, Ionică dreamed to become a policeman, but, when his father became ill, he started to play professionally in order to help his family. He quickly became an acclaimed accordionist and before he turned twenty he played only with several major figures of the ''lăutareasca'' music. Ionica Smeets (born 8 October 1979) is a Dutch mathematician, science journalist, columnist, television presenter and professor in science communication at Leiden University. Biography Ionica Smeets was born in Delft, where she completed her propedeuse in computer science at the Delft University of Technology. She switched studies and graduated in applied mathematics. Smeets was working on her thesis in mathematics, on a subject within number theory, at Leiden University when she started the blog ''Wiskundemeisjes'' (Math girls'''), on 14 March 2006, together with Jeanine Daems. The website has been awarded in 2007 with two ''Dutch Bloggies''. Since 2010, the two 'math girls' ran a column in ''De Volkskrant'' for several years. Ionica was a domestic telecoms provider based in Cambridge, UK, operating between 1995 and 1998. Founded in 1991, Ionica offered an alternative technology to British Telecom. The Ionica system used a microwave transmitter in order to provide the local loop, thus avoiding reliance on British Telecom for this final link to the consumer. The technology, known as Wireless local loop ( WLL), was developed in partnership with Nortel. However, rising costs and limiting technical factors caused the company to cease trading in 1998. Floatation The company floated in July 1997 with shares initially trading at 390p. At its peak Ionica was valued at over one billion pounds, the first Silicon Fen company to reach that value. Panyassis
Panyassis of Halicarnassus, sometimes known as Panyasis ( grc, Πανύασις), was a 5th-century BC Greek epic poet from Halicarnassus in the Persian Empire (modern-day Bodrum, Turkey). Life Panyassis was the son of Polyarchus ( grc, Πολύαρχος) from Halicarnassus, but the historian Duris of Samos claimed that Panyasis was the son of Diocles ( grc, Διοκλῆς) and from Samos. In addition, the historian Herodotus was either his nephew or his cousin. There was also another person of the same name, possibly the grandson of the poet, who wrote a work in two books on dreams. In 454 BC, Panyassis was executed for political activities by the tyrant of Halicarnassus and grandson of Artemisia, Lygdamis ΙΙ (), after an unsuccessful uprising against him. William Johnson Cory
William Johnson Cory (9 January 1823 – 11 June 1892), born William Johnson, was an English educator and poet. He was dismissed from his post at Eton for encouraging a culture of intimacy, possibly non-sexual, between teachers and pupils. He is widely known for his English version of the elegy ''Heraclitus'' by Callimachus. Life He was born at Great Torrington in Devon, and educated at Eton, where he was afterwards a renowned master, nicknamed "Tute" (short for "tutor") by his pupils. After Eton, where he won the Newcastle Scholarship, he studied at King's College, Cambridge, where he won the Chancellor's Medal for an English poem on Plato in 1843, and the Craven Scholarship in 1844. He was a writer of Latin verse as well as English verse. Adriatica Ionica Race
The Adriatica Ionica Race is an Italian annual professional men's road bicycle race introduced in the 2018 season as a part of the UCI Europe Tour, and currently classified as a 2.1 event. The race is organised by former professional cyclist Moreno Argentin and ASD Sport Union. History The race was founded by Argentin together with Quanto Basta, with its first edition taking place in 2018. Although the name of the race suggest the race being run between the coasts of the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea (similarly to how Tirreno–Adriatico is run between the Tyrrhenian and the Adriatic coasts), the first edition was run entirely within two mountainous Italian regions bordering the Adriatic Sea, namely Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.
