The Ionia Mayors were a Central League baseball team based in Ionia, Michigan, United States that existed for part of the 1921 season and in 1922. Central League (baseball)
The Central League was a minor league baseball league that operated sporadically from 1903–1917, 1920–1922, 1926, 1928–1930, 1934, and 1948–1951. In 1926, the league merged mid-season with the Michigan State League and played under that name for the remainder of the season. The Central League later reformed in 1928. Ionia, Michigan
Ionia is the largest city in, and the county seat of, Ionia County, Michigan, United States. The population was 13,378 at the 2020 census. Every July it hosts what is said to be the world's largest free-admission fair. The city is mostly within Ionia Township, with small portion extending into Easton Township and Berlin Township, but is politically autonomous of the townships. Frederick Raymond Kommers (March 31, 1886 – June 14, 1943) nicknamed "Bugs", was a professional baseball outfielder. Kommers played two seasons in the Major League Baseball. Clyde Ellsworth "Buck" Crouse (January 6, 1897 – October 23, 1983) was an American catcher in Major League Baseball. Early career "Bucky" was born on a farm in Madison County, Indiana and moved to Muncie, Indiana as a boy. He began his professional baseball career in 1921 with the Jackson Mayors team in the Michigan Central League. When they folded a year later, he joined the Muskegan Club in the Michigan–Ontario League. Major league career Chicago White Sox The American League Chicago White Sox purchased him in the middle of the 1923 season. It was in Chicago that Bucky began his longtime association with Hall of Famers Ray Schalk, whom he backed up as a catcher, and pitcher Ted Lyons, who preferred Crouse over any other catcher.
