''Into the Foothills'' (1914) is an American short (two-reel) silent Western film. It was written and directed by Webster Cullison and filmed on location in Tucson, Arizona in December 1913. The movie is believed to be lost. Plot The story is of a gold claim stolen and recovered. The dramatic apex of the film featured two men and a girl defending themselves against an attack by an intoxicated Mexican soldiers until they are rescued by United States Troopers. The hero of the drama, a young prospector discovers a gold mine but is shot by the father of the girl he loves. He recovers both his health and his mine which the villain was working to steel. Edna Payne
Edna Payne (December 5, 1891 – January 31, 1953) was an American silent screen motion picture actress. She was not in any feature-length films, but is regarded as a "pioneer" in the film industry because she was in many short films from 1911 through 1917. Career Her parents were both stage actors, so Payne began her career as a child in vaudeville, making her movie debut in ''Higgenses Versus Judsons'' (1911). She played the lead in reel dramas, and later in a few reel westerns including '' The Girl Stage Driver'' (1914). Although her film career was confined to the 1910s, she took part in countless productions. The Moving Picture World
The ''Moving Picture World'' was an influential early trade journal for the American film industry, from 1907 to 1927. An industry powerhouse at its height, ''Moving Picture World'' frequently reiterated its independence from the film studios. In 1911, the magazine bought out ''Views and Film Index''. Its reviews illustrate the standards and tastes of film in its infancy, and shed light on story content in those early days. By 1914, it had a reported circulation of approximately 15,000. The publication was founded by James Petrie (J.P.) Chalmers, Jr. (1866–1912), who began publishing in March 1907 as ''The Moving Picture World and View Photographer''. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library."
