U.S. Route 23 (US 23) is a part of the U.S. Highway System that travels from Jacksonville, Florida to Mackinaw City, Michigan. In the U.S. state of Tennessee, the highway travels in the northeastern part of the state from the North Carolina state line at Sam's Gap in the Bald Mountains, north to the Virginia state line in Kingsport. With a predominant concurrency with Interstate 26 (I-26), US 23 is a divided four-lane freeway that follows Corridor B of the Appalachian Development Highway System (ADHS) and serves as a major thoroughfare in the Tri-Cities. Although I-26 is technically an east-west route, the highway predominantly travels in a north-south alignment in Tennessee. The Tri-Cities is the region comprising the cities of Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol and the surrounding smaller towns and communities in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. All three cities are located in Northeast Tennessee, while Bristol has a twin city of the same name in Virginia. Bays Mountain
Bays Mountain is a ridge of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, located in eastern Tennessee. It runs southwest to northeast, from just south of Knoxville to Kingsport. Its southern segment is relatively low in elevation (up to about ). In some places it essentially merges with the surrounding plains, especially where it is bisected by the French Broad River and the Nolichucky River. The northern segment of Bays Mountain reaches higher elevations, averaging above with peaks reaching up to . It is not a single ridge, but rather a series of closely related ridges, some of which have names of their own(Fodderstack, Lost, Stone, Browns). Long Island (Tennessee)
Long Island ( chr, ᎠᎼᏰᎵ ᎫᎾᎯᏔ, translit=Amoyeli Gunahita), also known as Long Island of the Holston, is an island in the Holston River at Kingsport in East Tennessee. Important in regional history since pre-colonial times, the island is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark District. The Holston River is a river that flows from Kingsport, Tennessee, to Knoxville, Tennessee. Along with its three major forks (North Fork, Middle Fork and South Fork), it comprises a major river system that drains much of northeastern Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, and northwestern North Carolina. State Route 346 (SR 346) is a state highway in Hawkins and Sullivan counties in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. It connects Surgoinsville with Kingsport. Route description SR 346 begins in Hawkins County at an intersection with US 11W/ SR 1 in Surgoinsville and heads northeast through downtown and has a second intersection with US 11W/SR 1 and turns east onto US 11W/SR 1. The three routes begin a concurrency to Church Hill and then it turns northeast onto Main Street and then turns north onto North Central Avenue. and continues until it leaves the city limits of Church Hill, where it becomes Carter's Valley Road and crosses over the North Fork Holston River into Sullivan County and it meets its northern terminus, an intersection with US 23/ SR 36/ SR 137 on the north side of Kingsport just from the Virginia state-line. State Route 36 (SR 36) is a state highway, broken in two segments. In Unicoi County, it serves as the hidden concurrency of U.S. Route 19W; in Washington and Sullivan counties, it serves as a stand-alone secondary road connecting the cities of Johnson City and Kingsport. Route description Segment 1 SR 36 begins in Unicoi County as the unsigned companion route of US 19W at the Tennessee-North Carolina state line.
