Institute Of Acoustics, Chinese Academy Of Sciences
The Institute of Acoustics (IOA, ) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established in 1964 by the Chinese government in the context of China's national defense needs for acoustic research, under the auspices of Marshall Nie Rongzhen. By the end of 2017, the IOA counts more than 700 researchers focusing on the study of basic and applied acoustics, in the following fields: # Underwater acoustics and underwater acoustical detection; # Environmental acoustics and noise control technologies; # Ultrasonics and acoustical micro-electromechanical system technologies; # Communication acoustics, language/speech information processing; Integration of acoustics with digital systems, and network new media technologies. Ma Dayou or Dah-You Maa (; March 1, 1915 – July 17, 2012) was a Chinese acoustical physicist, specializing in various aspects of acoustics, especially sound generation, transmission and absorption. Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Ma was a research professor at Institute of Acoustics of CAS; Chairman of Chinese National Acoustics Standardization Technical Committee; and Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Acoustics. Nie Rongzhen
Nie Rongzhen (; December 29, 1899 – May 14, 1992) was a prominent Chinese Communist military leader, and one of ten Marshals in the People's Liberation Army of China. He was the last surviving PLA officer with the rank of Marshal. Biography Nie was born in Jiangjin County in Sichuan (now part of Chongqing municipality), the cosmopolitan and well-educated son of a wealthy family. Wang Dezhao or Ouang Te-Tchao (; December 20, 1905 – December 28, 1998) was a Chinese physicist who was known for his research in atmospheric electricity and underwater acoustics. Under the direction of Paul Langevin, he helped the French improve sonar at the beginning of World War II and after his return to China, Wang was considered as the founder of national defense water acoustics in China.
