The Innisfail Eagles are a senior ice hockey team based in Innisfail, Alberta, Canada. Alberta Senior AA champions in 2012–13, the Eagles moved up to compete at the Senior AAA level for 2013–14. They played in the Allan Cup Hockey West until 2020 and moved to the Senior AA Ranchland League in 2021-22. History The Eagles were founded in 1947. Innisfail, Alberta
Innisfail ( ) is a town in central Alberta, Canada. It is located in the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor, south of Red Deer, Alberta, Red Deer at the junction of Alberta Highway 2, Highway 2 and Alberta Highway 54, Highway 54. History The town's name comes from an Irish language, Irish-language epithet for Ireland, ''Inis Fáil'', "Isle of Destiny". Before this name was adopted, the town was often referred to as "Poplar Grove". Sandy Fraser, Napoleon Remillard, Arthur Content and Bill Kemp settled in the area from 1884 to 1887. These were Innisfail's first settlers. Dr. Henry George was an important physician and coroner for Calgary and Central Alberta. He settled in Innisfail and built a house he called "Lindum Lodge" (this is where the Dr. George/Kemp house is today). The Allan Cup Hockey West (ACHW) (formerly the Chinook League) is a multi-tier Canadian Senior ice hockey league based in Alberta, on hiatus as of 2021. The ACHW is one of two Allan Cup-eligible ice hockey leagues currently operating in Canada; the other is Ontario's Allan Cup Hockey. Since the beginning of the 1998–99 season, the Chinook and ACHW have produced four Allan Cup national champions: the 1999 Stony Plain Eagles, and the 2009, 2013 and 2016 Bentley Generals. Brian Sutter
Brian Louis Allen Sutter (born October 7, 1956) is a Canadian former ice hockey forward and former head coach in the National Hockey League (NHL). Brian is the second oldest of the famous Sutter brothers and the oldest of the six that played in the NHL. He is also the only one to have his number retired by an NHL team. Career Player Sutter was drafted by the St. Louis Blues during the 2nd round (20th overall) in the 1976 NHL Entry Draft. He played for the Blues until 1988, when a nagging back injury forced him into retirement. In 12 years with the Blues, he played in three NHL All-Star Games – 1982, 1983, and 1985. For the last nine years of his career, he was the Blues' captain. His jersey, #11, was retired by the St. Louis Blues on December 30, 1988. Peter Vandermeer (born October 14, 1975) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger, currently playing in the senior men's Chinook Hockey League with the Innisfail Eagles. Undrafted, Vandermeer played in two National Hockey League (NHL) games during the season for the Phoenix Coyotes. Kevin Smyth
Kevin Smyth (born November 22, 1973) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played 58 games in the National Hockey League. He played with the Hartford Whalers. He spent parts of three seasons with the Hartford Whalers between 1993 and 1996, playing 58 games for them. Though his big league career was fairly short, he was an explosive scorer in junior and a solid two way worker in the minors. His younger brother is former longtime Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Smyth. Playing career Smyth was chosen 79th overall by the Whalers in 1992 after a 30-goal season with the WHL's Moose Jaw Warriors. He returned to junior and notched 44 goals before seeing action in 21 games as an NHL rookie in 1993-94. Darryl Laplante (born March 28, 1977) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre who played in 35 career National Hockey League games for the Detroit Red Wings. He is currently a non-competitive pond hockey player for the Steelhawks Playing career After three seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Laplante made his professional debut with Red Wings' AHL affiliate, the Adirondack Red Wings in the 1997–98 season. Mike Brodeur (born March 30, 1983) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. He was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Ottawa Senators. Playing career Brodeur had a breakout AHL campaign with the Rochester Americans in 2008–09, when he posted an 18-13-4 record with a 2.45 goals against average and .921 save percentage, all career bests.
