Inner Circle Railway Line
The Inner Circle Line was a steam era suburban railway line (later electrified) in Melbourne, Australia. It served the inner-northern suburbs of Parkville, Carlton North, Fitzroy North, and Fitzroy. At its closure, it ran from Royal Park station on the Upfield line in the west to a triangular junction with Rushall and Merri stations on today's Mernda line in the east. There was also a branch line to Fitzroy that opened at the same time. History The Inner Circle was opened on 8 May 1888 with three stations: North Carlton and North Fitzroy on the main line, and Fitzroy at the end of a short branch line leading south through the Edinburgh Gardens from a junction near North Fitzroy station. Upfield Railway Line
The Upfield railway line is a commuter rail service operating between Flinders Street in the Melbourne central business district through Melbourne's northern suburbs including West Melbourne, North Melbourne, Parkville, Brunswick, Coburg, Coburg North, Hadfield, Glenroy and Coolaroo. The future of the Upfield line was in serious doubt in the late 1980s and early 1990s with proposals for the line to be converted into a light rail line or even closure. However, the future of the line was secured in 1995 with the upgrading of the signalling, closure or upgrade of the numerous level crossings, and duplication of the track between Fawkner and Gowrie. Merri Railway Station
Merri railway station is located on the Mernda line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the north-eastern Melbourne suburb of Northcote, and it opened on 8 October 1889 as Northcote. Outer Circle Railway Line
The Outer Circle Railway was opened in stages in 1890 and 1891, as a steam-era suburban railway line, in Melbourne, Australia. It traversed much of the modern City of Boroondara, including the suburbs of (from north to south) Kew East, Camberwell, Burwood, Ashburton, and Malvern East. At its longest, it ran from Fairfield station, on what is today the Hurstbridge line, to Oakleigh station, on the current Pakenham and Cranbourne lines. History The Outer Circle railway was first advocated in 1867, by a group known as the Upper Yarra Railway League, who suggested that the Gippsland Railway could be brought into Melbourne via the outer suburbs. Preston Railway Station, Melbourne
Preston railway station is located on the Mernda line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the northern Melbourne suburb of Preston, and it opened on 8 October 1889 as Preston-Murray Road. It was renamed Murray on 1 August 1905, and renamed Preston on 1 December 1909. History Opening on 8 October 1889, when the Inner Circle line was extended from North Fitzroy to Reservoir, Preston station, like the suburb itself, was named after Preston in Sussex, England. The name was chosen by Edward Wood, who was originally from Sussex and, in 1850, opened a general store at the corner of the current day intersection of High and Wood Streets. Victoria Park railway station is located on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines in Victoria, Australia. It serves the north-eastern Melbourne suburb of Abbotsford, and it opened on 8 May 1888 as Collingwood. It was renamed Victoria Park on 1 May 1909. A former goods yard is located adjacent to Platform 1, whilst a stabling siding, capable of holding two stabled trains, is located at the Down (northern) end of the station. Hurstbridge Railway Line
The Hurstbridge railway line is a commuter rail passenger train service in Melbourne, Australia. It shares tracks with the Mernda railway line until Clifton Hill, then heads in a north-east direction through the cities of Yarra, Darebin and Banyule, and the Shire of Nillumbik. It serves between Flinders Street in the Melbourne central business district through the northern suburbs up to Hurstbridge. The service is part of the Public Transport Victoria metropolitan rail network. Heidelberg Railway Station
Heidelberg railway station is located on the Hurstbridge line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the north-eastern Melbourne suburb of Heidelberg, and opened on 8 May 1888. History Heidelberg station opened on 8 May 1888, at a time when it was the terminus station on what is now the Hurstbridge line. The current island station design was officially opened on 1 September 1913. At one time, there was a goods yard opposite Platform 1. It made way for an extension of the commuter car park, although the goods shed still exists. At one time, there were three tracks running through the station - two served the island platform, and the third track was the last surviving stabling track. The third track was removed after a period of disuse. Between 26 January 1942 and 6 February 1942, 14 trains were modified to become ambulance trains. The Melbourne central business district (also known colloquially as simply "The City" or "The CBD") is the city centre and main urban area of the city of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, centred on the Hoddle Grid, the oldest part of the city laid out in 1837, and includes its fringes. Edinburgh Gardens is a large park located in the inner Melbourne suburb of North Fitzroy. It is bounded by Brunswick Street and St Georges Road to the west, the curve of Alfred Crescent to the north and east, and Freeman Street to the south.
