Ingvald M. Smith-Kielland
Ingvald Mareno Smith-Kielland (20 September 1919 – 9 May 2012) was a Norwegian royal servant. Personal life He was born in 1919. His father Ingvald Smith-Kielland served as chamberlain and court marshal from 1949 to 1955 and lord chamberlain from 1955 to 1966, under the kings Haakon VII and Olav V (from 1957). He was also the nephew of painter Per Smith-Kielland. Career Ingvald M. Smith-Kielland was first hired in the Royal Court in 1963, as an aide-de-camp. He became court marshal in 1966, and was promoted to lord chamberlain in 1985. He succeeded Odd Grønvold in both positions. When King Olav V died in early 1991, Smith-Kielland saw the opportunity to retire and was succeeded by Kaare Langlete. In the beginning of the year, the entire court of the Norwegian royal family comprised as little as nine people: Smith-Kielland, Langlete, Gunerius Flakstad, Ingegjerd Løvenskiold, Magne Hagen and Barbara Iliff. Ingvald Smith-Kielland
Ingvald Marillus Emil Smith-Kielland (9 August 1890 – 29 January 1984) was a Norwegian military officer, diplomat, sports official, and royal servant. He was born in Egge as the son of Colonel Ingvald Mareno Smith-Kielland (1863–1949) and Ragnhild Johanne Duborgh (1869–1961). He was a brother of painter Per Smith-Kielland. Through his grandmother Maren Elisabeth Bull Kielland (1821–1899), he was a first cousin once removed of people like Alexander Kielland. He finished his secondary education in 1908, and graduated from the Norwegian Military Academy in 1911 and the Norwegian Military College in 1913. After some years in the military he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1920, where he helped to negotiate Norwegian fishing rights near Eastern Greenland ("Erik the Red's Land"). Helge Ingstad
Helge Marcus Ingstad (30 December 1899 – 29 March 2001) was a Norwegian explorer. In 1960, after mapping some Norse settlements, Ingstad and his wife archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad found remnants of a Viking settlement in L'Anse aux Meadows in the province of Newfoundland in Canada. They were thus the first to prove conclusively that the Icelandic/Greenlandic Norsemen such as Leif Erickson had found a way across the Atlantic Ocean to North America, roughly 500 years before Christopher Columbus and John Cabot. He also thought that the mysterious disappearance of the Greenland Norse Settlements in the 14th and 15th centuries could be explained by their emigration to North America. Thor Heyerdahl KStJ (; 6 October 1914 – 18 April 2002) was a Norwegian adventurer and ethnographer with a background in zoology, botany and geography. Heyerdahl is notable for his ''Kon-Tiki'' expedition in 1947, in which he sailed 8,000 km (5,000 mi) across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. The expedition was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between societies. This was linked to a diffusionist model of cultural development. Heyerdahl made other voyages to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely separated ancient peoples, notably the ''Ra II'' expedition of 1970, when he sailed from the west coast of Africa to Barbados in a papyrus reed boat. Rolv Einar Rasmussen Ryssdal (27 October 1914 – 18 February 1998) was a Norwegian judge. From 1969 to 1984 he was the 16th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He was Vice President of the European Court of Human Rights from 1981 to 1985 and President from 1985 to 1998.
