Ingush Parliament Election, 2013
Indirect elections for the Head of the Republic of Ingushetia were held on 9 September 2013. Incumbent Head Yunus-Bek Yevkurov was re-elected for another 5 year term. Background Since 1992, Ingushetia has been a Republic of the Russian Federation. It held direct presidential elections until 2004 when Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin abolished direct elections. He replaced them with indirect elections in which the People's Assembly elected a Head. However, amid growing anti-Putin protests in 2011-2012, President Dimitry Medvedev reintroduced them. However, when Putin returned to power, he signed a decree that abolished direct elections in Dagestan and Ingushetia, and some saw it as an attempt to keep unpopular leaders in power. The Head of the Republic of Ingushetia (russian: Глава Республики Ингушетия), formerly ''President of the Republic of Ingushetia'', is the highest office within the Government of Ingushetia, Russia. The Head is elected by Parliament of Ingushetia. Term of service is five years. History On 4 June 1992, the Supreme Soviet of Russia adopted Act No. 2927-1 "On the formation of the Ingush Republic within the Russian Federation". Checheno-Ingushetia was officially divided into Ingushetia and Chechnya. On 2 November 1992, by the presidential decree, a state of emergency was introduced on the territory of the future Ingushetia and the Provisional Administration was created. Murat Zyazikov
Murat Magometovich Zyazikov (russian: Мура́т Магоме́тович Зя́зиков) (born September 10, 1957) is a Russian politician who was the second president of the southern Russian republic of Ingushetia. He was born in what is now Kyrgyzstan. Zyazikov was a controversial politician in Ingushetia. Political career In the 1980s, Zyazikov was a member of the KGB and later the FSB. In the 1990s, he became part of Ingushetia's security council and on May 23, 2002, he was elected president of the republic in the controversial circumstances. Zyazikov is considered a close ally with current Russian president and former Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, especially because of his province's proximity to Chechnya. On April 6, 2004, Zyazikov was lightly wounded when a car bomb was rammed into his motorcade (he sat in an armored Mercedes W140) on the main road near the city of Nazran.
