Inglês de Sousa (born Herculano Marcos Inglês de Sousa) was a Brazilian lawyer, professor, journalist, and novelist. He was born in Óbidos, PA, on December 28, 1853, and died in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, on September 6, 1918. Academia Brasileira De Letras
The Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) ( English: ''Brazilian Academy of Letters'') is a Brazilian literature, literary non-profit society established at the end of the 19th century. The first president, Machado de Assis, declared its foundation on Tuesday, 15 December 1896, with the by-laws being passed on Thursday, 28 January 1897. On Tuesday, 20 July of the same year, the academy started its operation. According to its statutes, it is the pre-eminent Portuguese council for matters pertaining to the Portuguese language. The ABL is considered the foremost institution devoted to the Portuguese language in Brazil. Its prestige and technical qualification gives it paramount authority in Brazilian Portuguese, even though it is not a public institution and no law grants it oversight over the language. Manuel Antônio De Almeida
Manuel Antônio de Almeida (November 17, 1831 – November 28, 1861) was a Brazilian satirical writer, medician and teacher. He is famous for the book '' Memoirs of a Police Sergeant'', written under the pen name Um Brasileiro ( en, A Brazilian). He is the patron of the 28th chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Biography Almeida was born in Rio de Janeiro, to lieutenant Antônio de Almeida and Josefina Maria de Almeida. Few things are known about his years of primary studies — although he entered at the Medicine course in 1849, graduating in 1855. Financial difficulties inspired him to dedicate himself to literature and journalism. His ''magnum opus'', '' Memoirs of a Police Sergeant'' (or, in Portuguese, ''Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias''), was initially published in ''feuilleton'' form during the years 1852-1853, in the journal ''Correio Mercantil''. Xavier Marques
Xavier Marques (born Francisco Xavier Ferreira Marques) was a Brazilian journalist, politician, novelist, poet, biographer and essayist. He was born on the island of Itaparica, BA, on December 3, 1861, and died in Salvador, BA, on October 30, 1942. He began primary education in his hometown but soon moved to the city of Salvador, enrolling in the school of Canon Francisco Bernardino de Sousa. In the Bahian capital, he dedicated himself to journalism, an activity that was only interrupted by his political work. He served two legislative terms: State Representative in Bahia, from 1915 to 1921, and Federal, from 1921 to 1924. His debut novel ''Boto and Company'' (1897) was followed by the novel ''Jana e Joel'' (1899), considered his best work. His fiction has been termed regionalist, set as it is in the province of Bahia.
