Abell 3742 is a galaxy cluster located around 200 million light-years (61 Mpc) from Earth in the constellation Indus. The cluster's brightest member is the elliptical galaxy NGC 7014. Abell 3742 is located in the Pavo–Indus Supercluster and is one of three major clusters along with Abell 3656 and Abell 3698. List Of Abell Clusters
The Abell catalogue is a catalogue of approximately 4,000 galaxy clusters with at least 30 members, almost complete to a redshift of ''z'' = 0.2. It was originally compiled by the American astronomer George O. Abell in 1958 using plates from POSS, and extended to the southern hemisphere by Abell, Corwin and Olowin in 1987. The name "Abell" is also commonly used as a designation for objects he compiled in a catalogue of 86 planetary nebulae in 1966. Pavo–Indus Supercluster
The Pavo-Indus Supercluster is a neighboring supercluster located about away in the constellations of Pavo, Indus, and Telescopium. The supercluster contains three main clusters, Abell 3656, Abell 3698, and Abell 3742. Other groups and clusters in the supercluster include the NGC 6769 Group and Abell S805 (IC 4765 Group, Pavo II, DRCG 1842-63) and the massive Norma Cluster. In 2014 it was announced that the Pavo-Indus Supercluster is a lobe in a greater supercluster, Laniakea, that is centered on the Great Attractor. The Virgo Supercluster would also be part of this greater supercluster, thus becoming the local supercluster. Indus (constellation)
Indus is a constellation in the southern sky first professionally surveyed by Europeans in the 1590s and mapped on a globe by Petrus Plancius by early 1598. It was included on a plate illustrating southern constellations in Bayer's sky atlas ''Uranometria'' in 1603. It lies well south of the Tropic of Capricorn but its triangular shape can be seen for most of the year from the Equator. It is elongated from north to south and has a complex boundary. The English translation of its name is generally given as ''the Indian'', though it is unclear which indigenous people the constellation was originally supposed to represent.
