State Road 301 in the U.S. state of Indiana is a short north–south route in Wells County in the northeastern part of the state. Route description SR 301 begins at SR 116 south of the town of Vera Cruz and travel northeast crossing the Wabash River, before entering Vera Curz. In the town SR 301 is concurrent with Center Street before turning northwest onto Wabash Street and leaving town. SR 301 logs its lowest average annual daily traffic (AADT) counts. The 2016 AADT figures show that 386 vehicles use the highway per day between Center Street and SR 124. Northwest of Vera Cruz the road passes through farmland before turning due north paralleling the east side of Ouabache State Park. The highway ends an intersection with SR 124 south of Craigville. Vera Cruz, Indiana
Vera Cruz is a town in Harrison Township, Wells County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 80 at the 2010 census. History Vera Cruz was laid out in 1848, and was named after Veracruz, Mexico. Originally, the town was named Newville, but the US Post Office had to have the name changed because there was another town named Newville in DeKalb County, Indiana. When selecting a county seat, Wells county chose between Newville and Bluffton because, at the time, they were about the same size. Ultimately, Bluffton was named the county seat, probably because of its more central location in Wells County. Bluffton, Indiana
Bluffton is a city in Harrison and Lancaster townships, Wells County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 10,308 at the 2020 census and the estimated population is 10,390. The city is the county seat of Wells County. History Bluffton was platted in 1838 and incorporated in 1851 with 850 people, it was named for river bluffs near the original town site. The Bluffton post office has been in operation since 1839. The City of Bluffton is nicknamed the "Parlor City" for its history of having some of the first clean paved streets in the area during the time of the Trenton Oil boom. Most streets at the time were dirt. The nickname came from the fact that the parlor in someone's home at the time would be the cleanest room in the house because that is the first space that your guests see when they come into your home. Wells County is a county in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 28,180. The county seat (and only incorporated city) is Bluffton. Wells County is included in the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Fort Wayne– Huntington– Auburn Combined Statistical Area. State Road 116 (SR 116) is a State Road in the northern section of the US state of Indiana. Running for about in a general southeast-northwest direction and it is signed east-west. The road connects Markle, Bluffton, and Geneva and passes through mostly farmland outside of cities and towns. SR 116 was originally introduced in the early 1930s routed between Markle and SR 3 north of Bluffton. The road was extended southeast to U.S. Highway 27 (US 27) in the late 1930s and early 1940s. In the mid-1940s the road was extended east to the Ohio state line, near New Corydon. This extension was removed between late 1990s and early 2000s, the east end of SR 116 was truncated to its current location at US 27. Ouabache State Park
Ouabache ʊ'bɑːtʃi(a French transcription of the Miami Indian word for the river, ''waapaahšiiki'', meaning "it shines white", "pure white", or "water over white stones") is a state park in Indiana. It is located south of Fort Wayne, Indiana near Bluffton, Indiana. It was originally the Wells County State Forest and Game Preserve, formed in the early 1930s. In 1962. it became the Ouabache State Recreation Area, before finally achieving state park status in 1983. The Wabash River runs through the park, which provides fishing and nature viewing. A fire tower offers an excellent view of the park. The park receives about 200,000 visitors annually. Until the 1960s, when the practice was stopped, it was the greatest producer of chicks of pheasants and quails in the United States, making it known as the "Greatest Wildlife Laboratory in the U.S." Remnants of some of the old pens can still be seen. State Road 124 (SR 124) is an east–west state road in the U.S. state of Indiana. The highway runs from SR 19 in Peru east through Bluffton and Monroe to end at Ohio State Route 81 near Willshire, Ohio. SR 124 runs through mostly agricultural land and near a few state parks through Northern Indiana. SR 124 was first designated as a state road in 1932 along a segment of its current route. It was extended west to the Miami–Wabash county line by the late 1930s and to Peru by the early 1950s. The entire route was paved in the early 1960s to the mid 1960s.
