Indiana Adjutant General
The Adjutant General of Indiana is the commander of the Indiana National Guard, the Indiana Guard Reserve, and, when active, the Indiana Naval Militia. The Adjutant General (or 'TAG') is responsible for all state, non-federalized military and reports directly to the Governor of Indiana. Indiana's TAG is appointed by the governor and serves a term concurrent with the governor. The Adjutant General must hold a rank of Brigadier General (BG) or higher. Indiana National Guard
The Indiana National Guard (INNG) is a component of the United States Armed Forces, the United States National Guard and the Military Department of Indiana (MDI). It consists of the Indiana Army National Guard, the Indiana Air National Guard, and the Adjutant General's Office. Indiana National Guard units are trained and equipped as part of the United States Army and Air Force. The same ranks and insignia are used, and National Guardsmen are eligible to receive all United States military awards. The INNG also awards a number of state awards for local services rendered in or to the state of Indiana. The Indiana National Guard consists of 14,000 Soldiers and Airmen, and maintains Army National Guard armories across the state, training facilities at Camp Atterbury-Muscatatuck, and Air National Guard wings at Fort Wayne and Terre Haute. Elmer Sherwood
Elmer W. Sherwood was an Indiana politician and state adjutant general for the Indiana National Guard in 1945. Sherwood was born in 1896 at Linton, Indiana. He majored in English at Indiana University until the United States joined World War I. Sherwood enlisted and was assigned to the 150th Field Artillery Regiment. That September, the regiment departed Fort Harrison for Europe as part of the 42nd Infantry Division (United States), crossing the Atlantic on the USS President Lincoln. Sherwood kept a diary during World War I, which was first published in 1922 under the title ''Rainbow Hoosier." After the war, Sherwood returned to Indiana University to finish his degree. While still a student, he was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives. He graduated in 1921, and married Lucile Smith in 1925. Conrad Baker
Conrad Baker (February 12, 1817 – April 28, 1885) was an American attorney, military officer, and politician who served as state representative, 15th lieutenant governor, and the 15th governor of the U.S. state of Indiana from 1867 to 1873. Baker had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of colonel, but resigned following his election as lieutenant governor, during which time he played an important role in overseeing the formation and training of states levies. He served as acting-governor for five months during the illness of Governor Oliver Morton, and was elevated to Governor following Morton's resignation from office. During Baker's full term as governor, he focused primitively on the creation and improvement of institutions to help veterans and their families that had been disaffected by the war.
