Indian Psychiatric Society
The Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) is the main professional organization of psychiatrists in India. It was founded in 1929 under the banner of the Royal Medico Psychological Association. Its current president is Dr. N.N. Raju. Founding The organisation holds its origins in 1929, when Berkeley Hill founded the Indian Association for Mental Hygiene. In 1935, the Indian division of the Royal Medico Psychological Association was formed due to the efforts of Banarasi Das. In 1946, Dr. Nagendra Nath De consulted Major R. B. Davis of the Central Institute of Psychiatry, Hospital for Mental Disease, Kanke, Ranchi, and Brigadier Thomas Arthur Munro, Advisor in Psychiatry to the Indian Army, decided to revive the association. Non-governmental Organization
A non-governmental organization (NGO) or non-governmental organisation (see spelling differences) is an organization that generally is formed independent from government. They are typically nonprofit entities, and many of them are active in humanitarianism or the social sciences; they can also include clubs and associations that provide services to their members and others. Covert Medication
Covert medication (also called concealed, hidden or surreptitious medication), the covert administration of medicines is when medicines are administered in a disguised form, usually in food or drink, without the knowledge or consent of the individual receiving the drug. The decision-making processes surrounding covert medication should be in the best interests of the patient, transparent and inclusive. Research suggests that covert administration of drugs is an embedded practice in nursing homes for the elderly in New Zealand. 43-71% of nursings homes in the United Kingdom acknowledge the practice. Pakistan Psychiatric Society
The Pakistan Psychiatric Society was founded in 1972 and registered in Karachi, Pakistan under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The society is dedicated to providing care to psychiatric patients, and also the promulgation of mental health education. It publishes various journals and pamphlets, such as the ''Journal of Pakistan Psychiatric Society''. Membership The society is led by president Imtiaz Ahmad Dogar and a board of trustees with an executive committee. PPS reports that its membership is primarily for medical specialists who are qualified, or in the process of becoming qualified, as psychiatrists. Applicants for membership must also hold a valid medical license (with the exception of medical students and residents) and provide one reference who is an PPS member. Anirudh Kala
Anirudh Kala, is an Indian psychiatrist based in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. He had been an active participant in the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) for forty years and had raised awareness about mental health legislation and related issues among Indian psychiatrists. He is clinical director of The Mind Plus, an acute psychiatric care clinic in Ludhiana. Dr Thomas Arthur Munro FRSE Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, FRCPE (1 October 1905 – 18 December 1966) was a 20th-century Scottish physician and psychologist. He was a joint founder of the Indian Psychiatric Society. In authorship he usually appears as T. A. Munro. Life Munro was born on 1 October 1905 in Calcutta in India while his father, Thomas M. Munro, was involved in the survey of the Hooghly River. His mother was the daughter of John Horne.
