Indian Island, Washington
Indian Island is an Unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Washington, United States. The whole island is covered by the Marrowstone CDP. It is located between Port Townsend Bay and Kilisut Harbor. Parts also border on Oak Bay and Scow Bay. Until the construction of the Port Townsend Ship Canal (also known as Portage Canal) Indian Island was connected to the mainland by a broad sand flat and backshore marsh. Indian Island is the location of the Indian Island Naval Reserve, which covers the entire island. No civilian residences are allowed on Indian Island. Indian Island is attached to Marrowstone Island, and is often grouped with it. All Marrowstone addresses are in Nordland, Washington, and the ZIP code for Marrowstone Island is 98358. Marrowstone takes its name from Marrowstone Point, the northernmost point on Marrowstone Island. Jefferson County, Washington
Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, the population was 32,977. The county seat and only incorporated city is Port Townsend. The county is named for Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson County was formed out of Thurston County on December 22, 1852, by the legislature of Oregon Territory, and included the northern portion of the Olympic Peninsula. On April 26, 1854, the legislature of Washington Territory created Clallam County from the northwestern portion of this original area. Port Townsend Ship Canal
The Port Townsend Ship Canal (also known as the Portage Canal) is a canal connecting Port Townsend Bay and Oak Bay in Jefferson County, Washington. Built in 1915, the canal separates Indian Island from the Quimper Peninsula of mainland Washington. State Route 116 crosses the only bridge over the canal. There are no locks. History Historically, Indian Island and Marrowstone Island were known collectively by settlers as the Craven Peninsula and later as the Scow Peninsula. This peninsula was attached to the mainland by a wide gravel ridge that lay above the waterline at high tide. The Chimakum would use this relatively narrow stretch of land as a canoe portage between Port Townsend Bay and Oak Bay, a route which became known in English as the Chimacum Portage. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers first proposed a canal at this location in 1850. A site survey was completed in 1889.
