Indian Golf Union
The Indian Golf Union (IGU) is the National Sports Federation and the Governing body of the sport of Golf in India. History The Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC), founded in 1829, initially managed all matters related to golf in India. The RCGC instituted several prestigious national golf tournaments. RCGC members decided to establish a new organization in 1955 to facilitate the growth of golf in India beyond the major metropolitan centers, to organize junior level tournaments and to send teams abroad for international events. The Indian Golf Union was established in December 1955 through an initiative undertaken by some senior golfers in Calcutta, and supported by golfers in Delhi, Mumbai and Madras. All administrative powers of the RCGC were transferred to the IGU after the latter's establishment, including the right to conduct the Amateur Golf Championship of India. Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. International Golf Federation
The International Golf Federation (IGF) was founded in 1958 and is the international federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the world governing body for golf. Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation
The Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, known by the abbreviation APGC, is an Asia-Pacific federation of national golf associations. The APGC organizes the major international amateur championships in the region and promotes golf. History The organization has its beginnings in 1962 during the Eisenhower Trophy in Kawana, Japan, when a tri-nation tournament between the Philippines, Japan and Chinese Taipei was proposed. The inaugural Asian Amateur Golf Team Championship was held 1963 in the Philippines, with a trophy donated by Shun Nomura that became known as the Nomura Cup, and the Amateur Golf Confederation of Asia was formed. The R&A started to help the APGC in 2002 when they offered to provide financial support for running the Nomura Cup. Royal Calcutta Golf Club
Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) in Kolkata, India was established in 1829 and is the oldest golf club in India and the first outside Great Britain. Golf in India is a growing sport. Golf is especially popular among the wealthier classes, but has not yet caught on with others due to the expenses involved in playing. The most successful Indian golfers are Jeev Milkha Singh and Anirban Lahiri. Singh has won three titles on the European Tour, four on the Japan Golf Tour, and six on the Asian Tour. His highest world ranking to date is 28th, achieved in March 2009. Singh has won the Asian Tour Order of Merit twice. Meanwhile, Lahiri has two European Tour wins and seven Asian Tour wins.
