Indian Derby
The Indian Derby is an annual Thoroughbred horse race. It is run over 2,400-metres and held on the first Sunday of February at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai. History The "Indian Derby" is the premier horse racing event of the country held annually on the first Sunday of February. A derby is a type of horse race, named after the Epsom Derby, run at Epsom Downs Racecourse in England. It was named after for Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby, who inaugurated the race in 1780. The Indian derby, later called the McDowell Indian Derby was sponsored by the United Breweries Ltd from 1984 Until 2022. It is one of the premier sporting activities in the city having the highest cash prize for any single sporting event in India. The race was first held in 1943 and was won by a filly Princess Beautiful, ridden by Edgar Britt. A horse length, or simply length, is a unit of measurement for the length of a horse from nose to tail, approximately . Use in horse racing The length is commonly used in Thoroughbred horse racing, where it describes the distance between horses in a race. Horses may be described as winning by several lengths, as in the notable example of Secretariat, who won the 1973 Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths. Pandu Khade
Pandu Khade (born 1923 in Vadgaon Malegaon, Vadgaon, Kolhapur District, Maharashtra, India – died 22 October 1999 in Kolhapur) was an Indian jockey who played in India and abroad. Career Khade was based at the premier Royal Western India Turf Club that comprised India's top Race track, racing circuit, the Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Bombay, and the Pune Race Course near Pune Cantonment. He rode many classic winners in the Indian One Thousand Guineas, 1000 Guineas, Indian Two Thousand Guineas, 2000 Guineas, Indian Derby, Indian Oaks and Indian St Leger. Khade also rode outside India accepting a generous offer from the Maharaja Gaekwar, Maharaja Gaekwar of Baroda to ride for him in England. He was the Maharajah’s retained jockey in India. Karl Umrigar
Karl Umrigar (4 October 1960 – 3 May 1979) born to a Parsi family, was a champion Indian jockey in the 1970s. His family sponsors a Karl Umrigar Trophy every year in his memory. He is survived by his parents Jimmy and Nan Umrigar, his sister Tina who is married to champion Jockey and Horse Trainer Pesi Shroff. Karl became a famous Indian jockey at the age of 17. In the 1978-79 Mahalaxmi racing season, Karl Umrigar who rode 144 mounts that season with 54 winners, 33 seconds, 22 thirds and 17 fourths, only 18 of his rides failing to finish in the frame. Walter Swinburn
Walter Robert John Swinburn (7 August 1961 – 12 December 2016) was a flat racing jockey and trainer who competed in Great Britain and internationally. Biography Swinburn was born in Oxford. He was the son of Wally Swinburn, who won the Irish flat racing Champion Jockey title in 1976 and 1977 and was the first jockey to record over 100 winners in an Irish flat season. Nicknamed the "Choirboy", he rode his first winner, Paddy's Luck, on 12 July 1978 at Kempton Park but gained considerable fame for riding the superstar Shergar to victory in The Derby in 1981 by a record 10 lengths. Swinburn went on to win the Derby two more times. Rashid Byramji
Rashid Byramji (5 November 1934 – 29 January 2022) was an Indian horse trainer. He was popularly known as the "horse whisperer" of Indian horse racing. In a career spanning over six decades, Byramji held the records for 3,170 wins including 230 classics. He was the only trainer to have had 10 Indian Derby winners and 12 Indian Invitation Cup winners. Early life Byramji was born on 5 November 1934 into a Parsis, parsi family of horse trainers. He was exposed to horses at an young age watching his grandfather, Byramji Rustomji, and his father, Rustomji Byramji, train horses. He completed his schooling in Mumbai, Bombay. Aslam Kader
Aslam Kader (born 9 December 1962, Mumbai, India) is a noted former Indian champion jockey. Kader has ridden over 1700 winning horses, including 75 wins in classic horse races over his two-decade career. Aslam Kader has won the Champion Jockeys title at every racing centre in India. He has won the title nine times at the Bangalore Center and thrice in Mumbai. He holds the record for having ridden the maximum of numbers in one season at Mumbai, which stands at 77. In September 2003, Kader fractured his collarbone due to a fall in a Pune race track incident. He later attempted to make a comeback but was unsuccessful, and had to retire. Colm O'Donoghue
Colm O'Donoghue (born 13 November 1980, Buttevant, County Cork, Ireland) is a multiple Group 1 and Classic winning flat jockey. For most of his career, he was based at the Ballydoyle racing stables in Rosegreen, Cashel, County Tipperary. Career In his final days as a schoolboy in 1996, O'Donoghue rang Aidan O'Brien to ask to be his apprentice. O'Brien agreed. The association continued for two decades. O'Donoghue rode his first winner, My Lorraine, at Sligo in 1997. Michael Kinane
Michael J. Kinane (born 22 June 1959, Killenaule, County Tipperary) is an Irish former flat racing jockey. He had a 34-year career, retiring on 8 December 2009. A prolific winner of the Irish, English and French Classic races over two decades, Kinane has ridden winners in the 2,000 Guineas four times, The Derby three times, the Melbourne Cup in Australia and, in the United States, the Belmont Stakes once. Kinane also has four wins in Breeders' Cup races. He has been Irish Champion Jockey on 13 occasions. Silvestre De Sousa
Silvestre de Sousa (born 31 December 1980 in São Francisco do Maranhão, Brazil) is a Brazilian flat racing jockey based in Britain. He was champion jockey of Britain in 2015, with 132 winners, and again in 2017 and 2018. Childhood and early career He was born in São Francisco do Maranhão, Maranhão. Richard Hughes (jockey)
Richard Hughes (born 11 January 1973) is a retired Irish jockey and current racehorse trainer who is based at Lambourn in Berkshire, England. Born in Dublin, he is the son of successful National Hunt trainer, Dessie Hughes. Hughes became British flat racing Champion Jockey in 2012 and retained that title in 2013, when he rode more than 200 winners in the season, and again in 2014. Riding career Hughes started pony racing aged seven, having his first win aboard Chestnut Lady in a six furlong race at Wexford.
