India At The 2017 Summer Deaflympics
India competed in the 2017 Summer Deaflympics which was held in Samsun, Turkey. India sent a delegation consisting of 46 participants for the event. This was the 13th time that India participated at the Deaflympics, Summer Deaflympics since making its Deaflympic debut in 1965. The delegation included Rohit Bhaker, who competed in his 6th Deaflympic event as the most experienced competitor for India at the multi-sport event along with Virender Singh (wrestler, born 1986), Virender Singh, who was competing in his 4th Deaflympic event. Indian delegation mainly dominated in the sport of wrestling including a solitary gold medal won by Virender Singh (Deaf Wrestler), Virender Singh in the men's 74 kg category. Overall, Indian athletes claimed 5 medals in the event including a gold medal and 2 bronze medals in the men's wrestling categories. Diksha Dagar
Diksha Dagar (born 14 December 2000) is an Indian professional golfer who is also hearing-impaired. She became the leading amateur ladies golfer in India from November 2015. Diksha Dagar represented India at the 2017 Summer Deaflympics where golf was included in the Summer Deaflympics for the very first time and competed in the women's individual golf event securing a silver medal. Diksha also qualified to represent India at the 2018 Asian Games. She is also considered one of the emerging amateur golfers in India. Jafreen Shaik
Shaik Jafreen (born 7 September 1997) is a deaf Indian tennis player. She represented India at the Deaflympics in 2013 and 2017. She claimed a bronze medal in the mixed doubles at the 2017 Summer Deaflympics partnering with Prithvi Sekhar. Career Jafreen started playing tennis when she was just eight years old. She went on to become a formidable tennis player despite being deaf, after being noticed by India's best female tennis player, Sania Mirza, and gaining assistance from her, receiving training at the Sania Mirza Tennis Academy which is located in Hyderabad. Prithvi Sekhar (born 3 October 1993) is an Indian male deaf tennis player. He represented India at the Deaflympics in 2013 and 2017. He won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles at the 2017 Summer Deaflympics partnering with Jafreen Shaik. He is also currently employed in the Integrated Coach Factory in Chennai. Competing in the 74 kg weight division, he has won 3 Deaflympics Gold Medals and a bronze medal in 4 appearances. He won gold medals at 2005 Summer Deaflympics (Melbourne, Australia), 2013 Summer Deaflympics (Sofia, Bulgaria) and 2017 Summer Deaflympics (Samsun, Turkey).
