Independent Music NZ
Independent Music New Zealand Incorporated (IMNZ) is a trade body which was set up in 2001 to provide a voice for New Zealand independent record labels and distributors. IMNZ mainly exists to promote independent labels and their artists; and to act as advocates for changes that may need to be made to the industry that will benefit independent labels. IMNZ started with about 15 member labels, this had grown to nearly 70 by 2007. Member labels and distributors' artists include such diverse acts as Hollie Smith, Scribe (rapper), Fat Freddy’s Drop, SJD (musician), 8 Foot Sativa, Fly My Pretties, Don McGlashan and many more. The organisation is a member of WIN – the World Wide Independent Music Network. Hollie Smith
Hollie Smith (born 17 November 1982) is a New Zealand soul singer-songwriter based in Auckland, New Zealand. Her four solo albums ''Long Player, Humour and the Misfortune of Others, Water or Gold,'' and ''Coming In From The Dark'' have all reached number one on the RIANZ albums chart, making her one of the most successful female New Zealand artists of the 21st century. Early years Smith attended Auckland's Willow Park Primary School, Takapuna Normal Intermediate and Rangitoto College. In 1999, as a 16-year-old, Smith made the album ''Light From a Distant Shore'' after winning Best Female Vocalist at the National Jazz Festival of NZ. This album of Celtic music was produced by her stepfather, Steve McDonald. Scribe (rapper)
Malo Ioane Luafutu, also called Jeshua Ioane Luafutu (born on 29 May 1979), and better known by his stage name Scribe, is a New Zealand rapper of Samoans, Samoan descent. He achieved two solo number ones on the singles chart from his debut album, ''The Crusader (album), The Crusader'', which was released in 2003 in New Zealand and later certified four times platinum. He also reached number one as a featured artist on P-Money's 2004 song "Stop the Music (P-Money song), Stop the Music", and in 2010 on R&B singer J.Williams (singer), J.Williams' single "You Got Me (J.Williams song), You Got Me". Fat Freddy’s Drop
Fat Freddy's Drop is a New Zealand seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. Originally a jam band formed in the late 1990s by musicians from other bands in Wellington, Fat Freddy's Drop gradually became its members' sole focus. Band members continued playing with their other respective groups—The Black Seeds, TrinityRoots, Bongmaster, and others—for much of their 20-year career. Fat Freddy's Drop are known for their improvised live performances. Songs on their studio albums are versions refined over years of playing them live in New Zealand and on tour abroad. SJD (musician)
SJD, or Sean James Donnelly, is a musician from Auckland, New Zealand. His music is a mix of pop-rock, soul, and electronic music. The name SJD also refers to Donnelly's touring band when not performing solo. History Donnelly has cited influences including Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), Gary Numan, the Human League and Soft Cell. SJD's debut album ''3'' was initially self-released on Swarf Records as 120 CD-Rs in 1999 before being picked up by Flavour Distribution. 8 Foot Sativa is a New Zealand-based extreme metal band formed in 1998. __NOTOC__ Fly My Pretties is a collaboration of musicians originally from Wellington, New Zealand who are known for coming together to record live albums, in various locations in New Zealand. The different musical backgrounds of the members make for an eclectic mix of songs on their releases. Fly My Pretties was the brainchild of Barnaby Weir, front man of the Black Seeds and Mikee Tucker of Loop Recordings Aot(ear)oa. The objective: To meet, exchange ideas, and then perform and record the results in front of a live audience. Don McGlashan
Donald McGlashan (born 18 July 1959) is a New Zealand composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist who Is best known for membership in the bands Blam Blam Blam, The Front Lawn, and The Mutton Birds, before going solo. He has also composed for cinema and television. Among other instruments, McGlashan has played guitar, drums, euphonium and French horn. McGlashan has played with percussion group From Scratch, and bands The Bellbirds, The Plague, and composed pieces for New Zealand's Limbs Dance Company. His first hits were with band Blam Blam Blam in the early 1980s. He later released four albums as lead singer and writer for The Mutton Birds. Beggars Group
Beggars Group is a British record company that owns or distributes several other labels, including 4AD, Rough Trade Records, Matador Records, XL Recordings and Young. History The companies’ roots stem from the Beggars Banquet record shops, which first opened in 1973 with a shop in Earls Court, London. In 1977, spurred by the prevailing DIY aesthetics of the British punk rock movement (then at the height of its popularity), the shop founders decided to join the fray as an independent label and release records as Beggars Banquet Records, which became the group's flagship label and namesake.
